Reds Hold on to Beat Phillies, 4-3
Strong start by Brennan leaves him at 2-0 on year

One run was the difference at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4 to 3. Don Brennan (pictured) (2-0) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 6 innings, surrendering 6 hits and 5 walks. Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Paul Derringer recorded the save, his 2nd. Phil Collins (2-3) was the losing pitcher. 'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Jimmie Wilson said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'



Cubs Nick Giants with 4-3 Win at Wrigley
Camilli, Hack lead Bruins hitters in key victory

The Giants were looking to close the Cubs NL lead to half a game. Instead, they wound up losing ground in a close fought battle this afternoon at Wrigley Field.

New York was unable to recover after Chicago went ahead in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring one runner using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Gabby Hartnett smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 6th of the season). Bud Tinning pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 2nd save. Dolph Camilli added three hits, raising his batting average to .422. The win went to Guy Bush (5-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Hi Bell (0-1) was the loser. He was touched for 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. With this win, Chicago has a league leading 17-8 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With this loss, New York has a 6-4 record of late, 14-10 overall.


Dodgers Rally for 9th Inning Win Against Dean, Cards

Dutch Leonard threw a complete game shutout and left fielder Buzz Boyle (pictured) had 3 base hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3 to 0. All afternoon, fans watched a great pitching duel between Leonard and St. Louis ace Dizzy Dean.

With a tieless score going into the 9th, Brooklyn erupted with the with 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Lonny Frey kicked off the action when he drew a walk. Boyle next to the plate and he smacked a single. Len Koenecke was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Johnny Frederick was up next and he tripled knocking home two runners. Sam Leslie stepped into the box and stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. Brooklyn had 7 hits for the afternoon, but star sluggers Joe Medwick and Rip Collins were silent. Leonard (3-0) was credited with the shutout. Dizzy Dean (2-5) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.


Boston Rallies Past Pirates with 9th Inning Comeback

Urbanski drives in winning run to keep Boston streak alive

Shortstop Bill Urbanski (pictured) had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Forbes Field as the Boston Braves pulled off a dramatic come back, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 7 to 6. Boston won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Hal Lee initiated the scoring spurt when he lashed a single. Al Spohrer was the next batter, but he struck out. Randy Moore then doubled scoring a run. Urbanski came up and he hit a single scoring the final run of the inning. Boston had a total of13 hits for the game. Leo Mangum (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Bob Smith got the save, his 3rd. Waite Hoyt (0-4) was the losing pitcher in relief. Bucs manager George Gibson was understandably not very talkative after his team's tough loss. He quickly showered and changed and when asked about the game had a terse, yet polite response, 'Hey fellows, that game was a heart-breaker to lose. Our guys gave it their all and played well - fate just wasn't smilin' on usthis afternoon'

The Washington Nationals defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 4 at Griffith Stadium. Washington had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. Joe Kuhel (pictured) had three hits for Washington, but the highlight belonged to Eddie Phillips who came through for the home fans when he slapped a base-hit which was good for two runs. Washington finished with 13 hits while Detroit ended up with 9. Earl Whitehill (5-1) allowed 4 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jack Russell earned his 2nd save. Tommy Bridges(0-4) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Bob Johnson hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI, and Joe Cascarella (pictured) tossed a complete game at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns by the count of 7 to 2. Johnson enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He delivered a single in the 1st, inning, smacked a one-base hit scoring a run in the 2nd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 7th of the season) in the 6th inning. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Cascarella(2-0) who went the distance, allowing only 2 runs. Ivy Andrews(1-2) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Babe Ruth cracked 2 home runs and had 5 RBI and Lefty Gomez pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians9 to 3. Ruth had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, lifted one outof the park for a two run home run in the 3rd inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning. New York had a total of 10 hits for the game. Gomez(3-3), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Lloyd Brown(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 3 home runs in his 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Muddy Ruel had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10 to 7 at Fenway Park. 3 White Sox hitters got four hits, including second baseman Bob Boken (pictured), who just came from Washington on a trade.

Obviously without his best stuff, Milt Gaston (3-1) still hung on to pick up the win. He gave up 7 runs, 7 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Chicago out-hit Boston for the game, 18 hits to 8. Les Tietje was credited with his 1st save. Gordon Rhodes (2-4) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Tommy Thevenow (pictured) had 4 hits at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates belted the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 13 to 1. Pittsburgh drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning when they tallied 5 runs on 4 hits. That was all Larry French (3-1) needed. Philadelphia was out-hit by Pittsburgh, 17 hits to 10. Ed Holley(1-1) ended up with the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning. The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at 13-8. With the loss, the Philadelphia ballclub's record is 8-13.

Third baseman Pepper Martin connected with a 'big fly' and had 2 RBI and Jesse Haines (pictured) pitched 5 strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the NewYork Giants in 13 innings by the score of 4 to 3 at Sportsman's Park. Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis won it inthe 13th inning. Martin cracked a solo homerun (his 2nd of the season) making St. Louis the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Although they lost, New York did out-hit St. Louis 12 to 7. Flint Rhem(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Al Smith(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

Bill Lee tossed a complete game as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 9 to 3 at Wrigley Field. Chicago scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had 4 base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Chicago rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon. Tommy Thompson (pictured) had three hits on the day, but the crucial at-bat was provided by Bill Urbanski who deflated the crowd as he delivered a base-hit which was good for two runs. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Boston was able to put down the rally. The victory went to Fred Frankhouse(2-3) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs. Frankhouse got relief help from Leo Mangum who gained credit for his 1st save. Allyn Stout(0-2) absorbed the loss. In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Athletics ripped the Detroit Tigers by a 8 to 3 count. Philadelphia won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring5 runners on 4 hits. The big moment was provided by Jimmie Foxx who electrified Shibe Park when he bombed a two-run dinger (his 10th of theseason). Philadelphia finished with 13 hits while Detroit ended up with 9. The winning pitcher was Bill Dietrich (2-1) (pictured) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings.Firpo Marberry(2-2) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 7 innings allowing 11 hits and no walks.

In game one, Monte Weaver went the distance as the Washington Nationals defeated the St.Louis Browns by the score of 4 to 2. Weaver (2-3) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 9 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 4.50. Washington rapped out 8 hits. Jack Knott (0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 hits and no walks in 3 innings. In the nightcap, Heinie Manush hit 2 doubles as the Nationals topped the Browns by a score of 5 to 2. Tommy Thomas (pcitured) yielded only a single earned run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Washington finished with 10 hits while St. Louis ended up with 5. The losing pitcher was Ed Wells(0-3) in relief. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.

Bob Weiland (pictured) pitched a complete game and he had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as theBoston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 5 to 1 at FenwayPark. Boston went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Eddie Morgan keyed the rally when he banged out a single. Rick Ferrell came to the plate and drew a walk. After another out, Weiland stepped up to the plate and he tripled scoring two teammates. That was all the offense they were to need. Boston had a total of 8 hits for the game. Weiland(4-2) allowed 1 run on the game. Oral Hildebrand(1-4) took the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

Ted Lyons tossed a complete game at Yankee Stadium as the Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees by the count of 5 to 4. Chicago scored 3 runs in the 4th inning. New York threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short when Lou Gehrig flew out with two runners on.

Lyons(1-0) picked up the complete game victory,allowing 4 runs. Frenchy Uhalt (pictured), subbing for an ailing Al Simmons, had 3 hits, providing much of Chicago's offense. Johnny Allen (2-1) took the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings. 'You can't give up that many walks and expect to win in this league,' explained Yankee manager Joe McCarthy. Gehrig was especially upset after the game, appearing to be close to tears for letting his teammates down.


Bill Dickey was seen trying to comfort a visibly distraught Gehrig.
