3,573 fans were treated to a fine game at League Park as only one run



separated the combatants at game's end. The Cleveland Indians put a halt to



their 5 game losing streak and won by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.







Oral Hildebrand(6-7) pitched a fine game. He went 8 innings allowing 8 hits



and 2 walks improving his ERA from 5.23 to 4.96. Chicago had a chance to



come back in the 9th but they came up short.







Belve Bean recorded his 1st save. George Earnshaw(5-10) was given the loss.



With this win, Cleveland has a 34-36 record. They have been 5-5 lately.



Chicago continued their losing ways and their record is now 24-49, worst in



the league. They are 2-8 in their last ten games.

The Boston Red Sox nipped the Philadelphia Athletics in 11 innings 4 to 3 at



Fenway Park in a hard fought contest.







Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston won it in



the 11th inning. Lyn Lary doubled. Rube Walberg was next and he laid down a



sacrifice bunt. Max Bishop then drew a walk. One out later, Eddie Morgan



came to the plate and laced a single making Boston the victor and beginning a



joyous home town celebration. For the game Boston out-hit Philadelphia 13 to



9.







Walberg(7-1) went 5 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Al Benton(7-5)



was the loser. He was touched for 13 hits and 4 walks in 10 and 2/3 innings.







Boston now has a record of a league leading 43-29. With the loss Philadelphia



now has a record of 40-31.

game at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees beat the Washington Nationals

Curt Davis allowed Jimmie Wilson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game



at Baker Bowl as the Philadelphia Phillies won a thriller over the Boston



Braves in, 4 to 3.







Philadelphia scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. After an out was



recorded, Lou Chiozza drew a walk. Ethan Allen stepped into the batter's box



and he delivered a base-hit. Allen took second on the throw. Johnny Moore



then would hit into a fielders choice resulting in an exciting win for



Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.



Philadelphia had a total of 11 hits for the game.







The victory went to Davis(7-7) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Ed



Brandt(5-10) ended up with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 1 hit in



1 and 1/3 innings.







This win by Philadelphia continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten



games, they have a record of 8-2. For the season, they are 32-41. With this



loss, Boston has a 4-6 record of late, 28-44 overall.

Joe Stripp had 2 base hits as the Brooklyn Dodgers rallied impressively to win



in dramatic style over New York Giants, 7 to 6.







Brooklyn won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 3



hits. Johnny Frederick led off and keyed the rally when he slapped a



one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Sam Leslie came up and he drew a



walk. One out later, Al Lopez stepped up to the plate and he slapped a



base-hit knocking in a run. Lonny Frey stepped in and he banged out a single



making Brooklyn victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. A wild



affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.







The win was credited to Phil Page(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Hi



Bell(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.







'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for you,' Stripp noted. 'It was



looking pretty dim there for a while, but we just kept plugging away and it



really paid off in spades! And it was great to see the crowd go crazy there



at the end!'
