August 28th, 1934 - AL News

Tigers Win As Rivals All Lose! Detroit ball club 1/2 game out of first; Foxx is tied for first in hitting, keeping triple crown hopes alive; Pennock "exhausted" say doctors - may not be able to join team on final road trip*

Tigers Win 3-2 Duel in Philadelphia
Bridges holds of Foxx, A's for narrow win
White Sox Cool Off Red Hot Yankees, 8-2
Simmons has big day at plate for ChiSox

Red Sox Lose Narrow Game to Cleveland, 5-4
Pennock ineffective as starter for Boston

Washington team, once contenders, now struggles to stay north of .500

* In reality, Herb Pennock did not pitch after August, and Hall of Fame researchers tell me its unlikely he joined the team for their month long September road trip (!). In real life, Boston was out of it, so this would make sense. Had Boston been in the thick of it though, it's likely Pennock would have continued. I've therefore decided that he will travel with the team in September. Because he has already reached his historical innings pitched, though, he will be used very sparingly.

Shortstop Leo Durocher had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the

St. Louis Cardinals won in their last at-bat beating the struggling Brooklyn

Dodgers by the count of 7 to 6.

The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the 9th inning. Burgess Whitehead

lined a one-base hit. Jack Rothrock followed and he drew a walk. Frankie

Frisch then stroked a single giving St. Louis the win and sending the home

town fans into a frenzy. Brooklyn was out-hit by St. Louis, 13 hits to 9.

The victory went to Dizzy Dean(17-8) who went 3 innings, allowing 2 runs.

Boom-Boom Beck(4-7) was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits

and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

This win by St. Louis continues their recent hot streak. In their last ten

games, they have a record of 9-1. For the season, they are 76-46. Not able

to get much going in recent weeks, Brooklyn is 0-10 of late and now has an

overall record of 47-73.

the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Stan Hack banged out a single.

Augie Galan came next and he laced a single. Kiki Cuyler then doubled giving

Chicago the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Chicago rapped

out 9 hits for the afternoon.

Lee(11-9) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Hal

Schumacher(14-9) was given the loss. He surrendered 9 hits and 3 walks in 9

defeated the Boston Braves by the score of 2 to 0 at Forbes

Field.

French(14-10) simply dominated Boston. He allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk in 9

innings. Pittsburgh finished with 9 hits in the victory.

Flint Rhem(7-9) ended up with the loss. For Pittsburgh, it was just another

victory in their mounting winning streak. Bill McKechnie was very irritated

after the contest. 'Just our luck to run into a team that's playing like a
