Jackie Hayes had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium where the Chicago



White Sox beat the Washington Nationals by the score of 12 to 7.







Washington never recovered after Chicago took the lead in the top of the 3rd



inning scoring 3 runners on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Ed Madjeski who



deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he delivered a base-hit which was



good for two runs. Chicago dominated offensively as they scored in 6



different innings.







Sam Jones(10-11) went 8 innings allowing 7 runs for the victory. Monte



Weaver(9-9) was given the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving



up 15 hits and 6 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings.

Al Simmons hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox



topped the Washington Nationals by a score of 4 to 2 at Griffith



Stadium.







Chicago jumped out to the early lead in the first inning plating an isolated



run utilizing 2 base hits. Washington was retired without difficulty in the



bottom of the 9th.







The winning pitcher was Harry Kinzy(2-1) who allowed no runs in 6 innings.



Phil Gallivan earned his 4th save. Jack Russell(7-4) absorbed the loss. He



gave up 4 runs and 9 hits in 9 innings.







'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Kinzy, 'I got burned on



a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'

Johnny Marcum was able to finish what he started and was credited with a



complete game and Ed Coleman hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Philadelphia



Athletics defeated the Cleveland Indians by a score of 8 to 2 at Shibe



Park.







Marcum(12-7) pitched a fine game. He went 9 innings allowing 9 hits and 1



walk. Philadelphia bats were very productive in the 8th inning which saw



them plate 4 runs on 6 hits. Philadelphia banged out 20 on the afternoon.







Willis Hudlin(7-12) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing



13 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

First baseman Jimmie Foxx had 2 base hits at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia



Athletics won a thriller over the Cleveland Indians in, 3 to 2.







The deciding run was scored by Philadelphia in the bottom of the 9th. After



an out was recorded, Eric McNair doubled. Charlie Berry stepped up to the



plate and he lined a single making Philadelphia the victor and beginning a



joyous home town celebration. Philadelphia had just 5 hits for the



afternoon.







The victory went to Mort Flohr(1-3) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. The



losing pitcher was Mel Harder(12-5). He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and



surrendered 5 hits and 4 walks.

The St. Louis Browns came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the



anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 5 to



4.







St. Louis had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs



using 2 hits. Rollie Hemsley led off and he banged out a single. Grover



Hartley stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Roy Pepper then



laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ollie Bejma was up next and he laced a single



plating a run. Sammy West stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly



scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis finished with 7 hits in the



victory.







Jack Knott(4-5) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 3 innings. Bill



McAfee earned the save, his 1st. Red Ruffing(10-10) was tagged with the



loss.







'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Ruffing said. 'The bottom line is I



didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'

Tommy Bridges completed the game without help from the bullpen and Charlie



Gehringer touched them all and had 5 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the



Boston Red Sox by a score of 14 to 5.







Gehringer enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He stroked a one-base hit scoring



two baserunners in the 2nd inning, lofted a three-run 'big-fly' (his 14th of



the season) in the 4th inning and lined a base-hit in the 7th inning.



Detroit managed 18 in their victory.







The victory was credited to Bridges(11-14) who went the distance, allowing 5



runs. The loss was charged to Johnny Welch(9-7). He allowed 12 hits and 3

Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Braves 12 to 7.







Jesse Haines(5-3) pitched in relief and was credited with the victory. He



surrendered 6 hits and no walks in 5 innings. St. Louis banged out 18 on the



afternoon.







Ben Cantwell(6-7) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 17 hits and



4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings. St. Louis continued their winnings ways

Paul Waner lofted one into the 'cheap seats' at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh



Pirates staged a comeback win over the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 4 to



3.







Pittsburgh had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2



runs on 3 hits. Waner got things going when he tripled. Fred Lindstrom came



to the plate and laced a one-base hit plating a run. Arky Vaughan then



doubled. Gus Suhr came up and he would hit into a fielders choice making



Pittsburgh victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. Although



they lost, Brooklyn did out-hit Pittsburgh 12 to 7.







Bill Swift(8-8) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Watty



Clark(2-4) suffered the loss in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in



perseverance for you,' Waner noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a



while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And



it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'

game and Tuck Stainback had 3 base hits as the Chicago Cubs defeated the

Chicago brought 3 runs across the plate in the 5th inning with the help of 3



hits. The key at-bat was by Kiki Cuyler who came through for the home fans



when he banged out a single bringing in two baserunners. Chicago managed 11

Malone(10-8), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Snipe
