Cubs Prevail in Tight Match with Cards, 2-0

Lon Warneke pitched 9 strong innings at Sportsman's Park as the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 2 to 0. Warneke (2-0) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 2.00 to 1.00. Chicago had a total of 7 hits for the game. Dizzy Dean(0-2) absorbed the loss. He allowed 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.



Brooklyn Nips Philadelphia, 5-4 at Ebbets
Leslie goes 4-5 to boost home team

Sam Leslie (pictured) had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Ebbetts Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers won a thriller over the Philadelphia Phillies in, 5 to 4. The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning. Joe Stripp lined abase-hit. After an out was recorded, Hack Wilson came up and he delivered a single. Leslie then banged out a single making Brooklyn victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd. For the game Brooklyn out-hit Philadelphia 14 to 9. The victory went to Les Munns(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing 2 runs. Reggie Grabowski (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.




Pirates Rout Reds at Crosley

Larry French was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game and Lloyd Waner had 3 base hits at Crosley Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 9 to 2. French(1-1) gave Pittsburgh a solid outing. He allowed 11 hits and no walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 9.64 to 4.61. Pittsburgh had 18 hits for the afternoon. Si Johnson(0-2) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Pittsburgh, allowing 13 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings. Part of the Reds' problem was sparkling defense as well as offense by the Pirates. Earl Grace (pictured) not only had two hits, he also made a spectacular tag out at home place, helping to put out what little fire the Reds were able to muster.


Brandt Tames Giants In 3-2 Braves Win
Berger hits second homer to power Boston

New York (NL) 2 8 1

Ed Brandt carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Boston Braves topped the New York Giants by a score of 3 to 2 at Polo Grounds. Brandt (2-0) delivered a fine performance for Boston. He went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and no walks. The left-hand Brandt lost his no-hit bid when Giants' pitcher Fred Fitzsimmons singled with one out in the 6th inning. New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Mel Ott, who would have been the tying run, was gunned down at the plate when he tried to score from second on a Travis Jackson single. Brandt was helped out by Bob Smith who recorded his 1st save. Fitzsimmons (1-1) was hit with the loss. He pitched 9 innings giving up 9 hits and 1 walk.
