August 13th, 1934 - Book Review - Breaking the Slump

Breaking the Slump: Baseball in the Depression Era

Charles Alexander
Columbia Press, 282 pages + notes and index

Breaking the Slump is a straight forward narrative account of baseball in the 1930s. It does a good job with "who, what, where and when" in recounting the baseball seasons from 1930 through 1941. What Breaking the Slump fails to do is convey a good sense of the game during that period. Further, written by an academic historian, Breaking the Slump simply does not hold the reader's attention as a good baseball history should.

The "color" is pretty much tucked into a single chapter near the end in which Alexander talks about life in baseball during the decade. This is a shame. The game saw some of its most colorful, zany characters during this time period. Hilarious anecdotes involving players such as Dizzy Dean and Lefty Gomez abound, and can be found in the oral histories of the game during this time, as can the more tragic side of the hard scrabble life of the 1930s.

If Breaking the Slump does not serve well as a popular history due to its dryness, it is too short to be a definitive academic treatment of the era either. Nowhere is there a comprehensive treatment of any aspect of the game. Instead, it falls somewhere in between.

In sum, for a solid basic history of the game during this time, Breaking the Slump will do. But it will need to be supplemented with various oral histories and memoirs if the reader is to fully appreciate what made the game so special during this era. It took me longer to read Breaking the Slump than Lee Lowenfish's superb new biography of Branch Rickey, which is more than twice as long. Given the colorful nature of the game and its players during the Great Depression, I'm afraid Alexander must shoulder some of the blame for this otherwise good book being as dry as it is.

Win:Dean(10-6) Loss:Weaver(5-7)

Homeruns- R.Collins(30th)

Paul Dean went the distance as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the reeling

Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 3 at Sportsman's Park.

St. Louis jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 2nd inning plating an

isolated run using 2 hits. Chicago proved to be no trouble in the 9th.

Dean(10-6) allowed 3 runs on the game. Jim Weaver(5-7) suffered the loss. He

pitched 7 innings allowing 9 hits and 3 walks.St. Louis won for the 6th

straight time. Frankie Frisch was in a talkative mood after the ballgame.

'Fellows, I don't know what to tell you. our guys are just playing lights out

lately. Everything and everybody is just really hitting on all cylinders. I

know it can't last forever - but that isn't going to stop us from trying!'

Win:Dean(14-8) Loss:Malone(9-8)

Dizzy Dean pitched a complete game and first baseman Rip Collins had 4 hits

and 2 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the seemingly unstoppable St. Louis

Cardinals beat the slumping Chicago Cubs 11 to 5.

St. Louis tallied 5 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 5 hits. The big

moment was provided by Collins who electrified Sportsman's Park when he

tripled scoring two baserunners. St. Louis rapped out 16 hits for the

afternoon.

Dean(14-8) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. The losing pitcher was

Pat Malone(9-8). He was unable to control the St. Louis offense and allowed

9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

St. Louis continued on their recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 7

games and counting.

Cincinnati Reds in 14 innings by a score of 2 to 1 at Forbes Field.

Both teams were tied at 1 runs apiece after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the

hard fought contest in the 14th inning. After two were out Fred Lindstrom

reached on an error. Ray Kolp then let one slip out of his hand for a wild

pitch. Vaughan then lashed a single giving Pittsburgh the win much to the

delight of the home town crowd. Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Cincinnati 13 to

9.

The win went to Ralph Birkofer(12-7) who allowed no runs in 6 innings.

Kolp(4-4) was hit with the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he

did not allow an earned run in his 3 innings of work.
