with a 5 to 0 victory.







Chicago fell behind quickly as the Cleveland offense came through in the first



inning plating an isolated run. That early scoring held up. Cleveland



managed 8 in their victory.







Vern Kennedy(1-2) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks



in 8 innings.

hits and 4 walks. Washington had a chance to come back in the 9th but they



came up short.

George Hockette came through with a solid 9 innings at Fenway Park where the



Boston Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 3 to



0.







Boston scored all of the necessary runs in the 5th inning with 3 runs. Skinny



Graham started the inning off right when he reached on an error. Eddie



Morgan stepped up next and he drew a walk. Gordie Hinkle then tripled



scoring two baserunners. Lyn Lary came up and he hit a sacrifice fly scoring



the final run of the inning. Boston and Philadelphia each finished the



afternoon with 4 hits.







Hockette(1-2) went the distance for the shutout. Bill Dietrich(12-9) was the



losing pitcher. 'All of my pitches were working today,' Hockette said. 'I



felt really good out there, and heck, I think I could have gone longer.'

Flint Rhem(10-12) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 13 hits and 2



walks in 6 innings. When asked about his strikeout total for the game,



Walters offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them tally



up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept them



busy this afternoon - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'

Lon Warneke tossed a complete game and Kiki Cuyler had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the



Chicago Cubs topped the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings by a score of 2 to 1



at Wrigley Field.







The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Chicago won the game in



the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Stan Hack hit a single. Augie



Galan was next and he stroked a single. Cuyler then lined a single making



Chicago the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Chicago



rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.







The victory went to Warneke(23-8) who went the distance allowing 1 run. The



loss was charged to Larry French(16-14). He allowed 2 runs and 8 hits in 9

Charlie Root(8-4) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He



went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits and no walks. Pittsburgh threatened



in the 9th but Chicago was able to put down the rally.







Bud Tinning was credited with his 6th save. Steamboat Struss(0-1) was the
