At Griffith Stadium, the Washington faithful were treated to an intriguing

pitcher's duel. Earl Whitehill(11-3) finally bested his Detroit counterpart,

Tommy Bridges(7-6), by the score of 3 to 1.



Washington won the game with a rally in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2

runs. After an out was recorded, Buddy Myer started the attack as he drew a

walk. John Stone stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. After another

out, Joe Cronin stepped in and he smacked a single scoring a run. Cronin

took second on the throw. Cecil Travis followed and he drew a walk to load

the bases. Joe Kuhel stepped into the box and drew a walk scoring the final

run of the inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the

6th inning.



Whitehill got help from Alex McColl who earned his 5th save. Bridges suffered

the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings.

Hank Johnson tossed a complete game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago

White Sox 8 to 3 at Fenway Park.



Boston took the lead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring 2 runs

on 3 hits. Bill Cissell got things going when he stroked a single. Ted

Lyons then was wild with a pitch. Billy Werber then delivered a base-hit

scoring a run. After an out was recorded, Roy Johnson stepped up to the

plate and he smacked a single. Dusty Cooke came to the plate and drew a walk

to load the bases. Dick Porter continued the rally and hit a deep fly

scoring the final run of the inning. Both teams ended up with 11 on the

afternoon.



The victory went to Johnson(2-1) who went the distance allowing 3 runs.

Lyons(2-7) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 5

walks in 8 innings.



Boston now has a record of 33-25. Jimmy Dykes was unhappy with his club's

recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be

embarrassing after a while.'

The Boston Red Sox had an easy time of it at Fenway Park defeating the Chicago

White Sox by a score of 8 to 3.



Gordon Rhodes(5-8) had a steady outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 5 walks in

5 and 2/3 innings. Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.



Rhodes got help from Joe Mulligan who was credited with his 1st save. Whit

Wyatt(3-3) took the loss. He couldn't find the strike zone and allowed 7

walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.



With this win, Boston has a 34-25 record. They have been 7-3 lately. Chicago

can't seem to snap out of their recent 'funk'. Now they have a miserable 2-8

record over the last couple weeks.

Lou Gehrig had 5 hits and 5 RBI at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees

beat the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings 11 to 10.



The score was tied at 10 after nine. New York ended up winning it in the 10th

inning. Jimmie Deshong drew a walk. Two outs later Babe Ruth came up and he

stroked a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for New York and the

4,460 home town fans in attendance. New York rapped out 19 hits for the

afternoon.



Deshong(4-1) got the win allowing 4 runs in 3 innings. Belve Bean(1-2) was hit

with the loss in relief. He was hit hard and gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 2

innings.





ST. LOUIS AT PHILADELPHIA

Bobo Newsom pitched a complete game as the St. Louis Browns outscored the

Philadelphia Athletics 4 to 2.



Newsom(5-4) was very good in the win. He allowed just 4 hits and 4 walks in 9

innings and allowed 2 gopher balls. St. Louis totaled 12 on the afternoon.



Roy Mahaffey(1-7) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and no

walks in 5 innings.

Johnny Marcum had a strong outing as the Philadelphia Athletics topped the St.

Louis Browns by a score of 6 to 2 at Shibe Park.



Marcum(7-3) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't give up much,

just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 4.32 to 4.10.

Philadelphia managed 9 in their victory.



Jack Knott(1-2) was the loser. 'I've been working on a few things in my

delivery, and I think I'm hitting a good groove.' Marcum said after the game.

'I'm ready to start another game tomorrow!'

Fred Frankhouse went the distance and Randy Moore had 2 base hits at Forbes

Field as the Boston Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 5 to

2.



In the 6th inning Boston went on top for good scoring one runner. Both teams

ended up with 9 on the afternoon.



The win was credited to Frankhouse(7-6) who went the whole way allowing 2

runs. Ralph Birkofer(4-6) took the loss. He surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks

in 7 innings.

Dizzy Dean whitewashed Brooklyn as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the

Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 3 to 0 at Sportsman's Park.



Dean(6-7) looked very much in control throughout the day. He allowed only 5

hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.16 to 2.92. St.

Louis took care of Brooklyn with no trouble in the 9th.



Tom Zachary(1-4) suffered the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits

and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Bill Swift was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game and Tom Padden had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Forbes Field where the

Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Boston Braves by the score of 6 to 1.



Pittsburgh drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning

as they scored 4 runs on 5 base hits. That early scoring was all that

Swift(4-3) needed. Pittsburgh banged out 13 on the afternoon.



The loss was charged to Dick Barrett(1-2). He was hit hard and gave up 13

hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Lon Warneke pitched a complete game and Chuck Klein cracked a homer as the

Chicago Cubs beat the New York Giants by a score of 3 to 2.



The game was won by Chicago with a run in the bottom of the 8th inning. After

two outs Klein lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' (his 8th of the season). New

York was set down quietly in the 9th.



Warneke(11-2) allowed 2 runs on the game. The losing pitcher was Carl

Hubbell(10-4). He pitched 8 innings allowing 9 hits and 2 walks.

Ed Holley(2-3) looked shaky but got the win. He gave up 4 runs, 10 hits and 1

walk in 5 innings. Philadelphia had 17 hits overall, while Cincinnati had

14.



Holley got relief help from Snipe Hansen who gained credit for his 1st save.

Tony Freitas(0-4) suffered the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia,

allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.



With this win, Philadelphia has a 21-35 record. They have been 3-7 lately.

With the loss Cincinnati now has a record of 21-34.
