October 18th, 2007 - Vacation Notice

Depression Era Baseball and family are headed to the beach for a few days.

Tigers Prevail in 13 Inning Pitching Duel
Rowe goes the distance for the win; Gehringer with walk off

Charlie Gehringer went yard and Schoolboy Rowe came through with a solid 13 innings as the Detroit Tigers outscored the Chicago White Sox in 13 innings 3to 2.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Detroit won it in the 13th inning. Gehringer delivered a solo blast (his 7th of the season) giving Detroit thewin and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Detroit banged out 13 on the afternoon. The victory went to Rowe(6-2) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Phil Gallivan(0-4) took the loss in relief. He surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk in 1inning. 'Rowe took our guys to school' Jimmy Dykes said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch forus - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'



A's Batter Yankees in 8-1 Win

In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Athletics scored 5 runs in the 4th inningand ripped the New York Yankees by a 8 to 1 count. In the top of the 2nd inning Philadelphia went on top for good plating anisolated run utilizing 2 base hits. Philadelphia had 13 hits for theafternoon while New York had 10. The victory went to Roy Mahaffey(1-5) who went 5 and 1/3 innings, allowing noruns. Johnny Murphy(4-3) absorbed the loss. He was touched for 10 hits and 3walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.


Indians Win Tight One Over Browns

Bob Weiland was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the Cleveland Indians defeated the St. Louis Browns 2 to 1at League Park. Weiland (6-2) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 6 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Cleveland had a total of 7 hits for the game. Dick Coffman (0-6) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 7 hits in 8 innings.



Red Sox Win Over Nationals, 6-4
Pennock earns 5th save, Werber homers in BoSox victory

Third baseman Billy Werber homered as the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals by a score of 6 to 4.
Washington never recovered after Boston took the lead in the bottom of the 7th, scoring one runner using 2 hits. Washington had a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

Wes Ferrell (1-0) got the win allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Herb Pennock got the save, his 5th. Tommy Thomas(2-2) was tagged with the loss.
'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff,' Bucky Harris said after the game. 'Ferrell did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!'
