Center fielder Gee Walker had 4 hits at Navin Field where the Detroit Tigers

beat the Washington Nationals 4 to 2.



Detroit scored 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key

at-bat was by Goose Goslin who electrified Navin Field when he banged out a

single which was good for two runs. Detroit out-hit Washington for the game,

10 hits to 6.



The victory was credited to Carl Fischer(5-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 2

runs. Firpo Marberry was credited with his 1st save. Lefty Stewart(3-9)

Wes Ferrell tossed a complete game and Roy Johnson jacked one out of the

ballyard as the Boston Red Sox topped the Chicago White Sox by a score of 5

to 3 at Comiskey Park.



Ferrell(7-2) pitched well for Boston in their victory. He went 9 innings

allowing 8 hits and 2 walks. Boston finished with 10 hits in the victory.



Les Tietje(3-7) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 8 hits in 7

innings.

Left fielder Roy Pepper had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the St. Louis Browns

rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Philadelphia Athletics, 12

to 10.



St. Louis won the game with an offensive outburst in the bottom of the 9th

inning when they exploded for 8 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was

provided by Rogers Hornsby who made the crowd come alive when he launched a

rocket-shot out of the park for a Grand Slam homerun (his 3rd of the season).

Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6 different innings was still

not enough for Philadelphia to come away with the victory.



Bill McAfee(2-1) allowed 4 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. Roy Vaughn(0-1) was the loser in relief. McAfee and Pepper were

really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind

victory. As Hornsby noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's

attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys

- it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'

Grounds as the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Giants by the count of 2 to

Warneke(14-4) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He was stingy on the

mound, allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Chicago and New York

Carl Hubbell shut down the Chicago batters on just 3 hits as the New York

Giants defeated the Chicago Cubs 2 to 0 at Polo Grounds.



Hubbell(14-5) simply dominated Chicago. He allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks in

9 innings. The pitchers took over after the 1st inning as neither team was

able to score again.



Bill Lee(7-6) took the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 7 hits and

2 walks.

Chick Hafey left the yard and had 4 RBI and Tony Freitas pitched a complete

game at Baker Bowl as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to

5.



Hafey had a big day against Philadelphia. He tripled which was good for two

runs in the 1st inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 9th of

the season) in the 3rd inning. Philadelphia had 13 hits in the game while

Cincinnati had 10, but Cincinnati had the more timely hits.



The victory was credited to Freitas(3-6) who went the distance, allowing 5

runs. The losing pitcher was Curt Davis(8-8). He allowed 7 runs and 10 hits

in 8 innings.



The Cincinnati ballclub's record now stands at 32-48. With the loss, the

Philadelphia ballclub's record is 36-48.

Lonny Frey had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the St. Louis

Cardinals in 12 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Ebbetts Field.



The score was tied at 4 after nine. Brooklyn won it in the 12th inning.

After two outs Boom-Boom Beck ripped a base-knock. Buzz Boyle followed and

he drew a walk. Frey then doubled giving Brooklyn the win and sending the

home town fans into a frenzy. Brooklyn rapped out 13 hits for the afternoon.



Beck(4-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Jim

Mooney(3-4) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 2 hits in 1

and 2/3 innings.
