Nats Hit Bridges Hard in 7-4 Win

The Washington Nationals defeated the Detroit Tigers by a score of 7 to 4 at Griffith Stadium. Washington had the winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. Joe Kuhel (pictured) had three hits for Washington, but the highlight belonged to Eddie Phillips who came through for the home fans when he slapped a base-hit which was good for two runs. Washington finished with 13 hits while Detroit ended up with 9. Earl Whitehill (5-1) allowed 4 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Jack Russell earned his 2nd save. Tommy Bridges(0-4) was the loser. He was hit hard and gave up 13 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.


Cascarella, A's Shutdown Browns to Win 7-2

Bob Johnson hit one over the fence and had 4 RBI, and Joe Cascarella (pictured) tossed a complete game at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the St. Louis Browns by the count of 7 to 2. Johnson enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He delivered a single in the 1st, inning, smacked a one-base hit scoring a run in the 2nd inning and lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 7th of the season) in the 6th inning. Philadelphia had 14 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Cascarella(2-0) who went the distance, allowing only 2 runs. Ivy Andrews(1-2) was hit with the loss. He was knocked around by Philadelphia, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Babe Ruth cracked 2 home runs and had 5 RBI and Lefty Gomez pitched a complete game at Yankee Stadium where the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians9 to 3. Ruth had a big day at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning, lifted one outof the park for a two run home run in the 3rd inning and lofted a three-run bomb (his 4th of the season) in the 6th inning. New York had a total of 10 hits for the game. Gomez(3-3), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Lloyd Brown(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 3 home runs in his 5 and 1/3 innings of work.

Muddy Ruel had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 10 to 7 at Fenway Park. 3 White Sox hitters got four hits, including second baseman Bob Boken (pictured), who just came from Washington on a trade.

Obviously without his best stuff, Milt Gaston (3-1) still hung on to pick up the win. He gave up 7 runs, 7 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. Chicago out-hit Boston for the game, 18 hits to 8. Les Tietje was credited with his 1st save. Gordon Rhodes (2-4) absorbed the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.
