May 18th, 1934 - AL Game Summaries

Tigers Prevail in Second Straight Over Yankees
Owen hits key triple in 8th

In a good matchup it was the Detroit Tigers 6, the New York Yankees 4 at Navin Field. Detroit erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning with 3 runs using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Charlie Gehringer got things rolling whenhe stroked a single. Billy Rogell came next and he doubled. One out later, Mickey Cochrane stepped up to the plate and he was walked intentionally to load the bases. Marv Owen was up next and he tripled clearing the bases. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times. The win was credited to Elden Auker (2-1) (pictured) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.The loss was charged to Red Ruffing(3-2). He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.


Indians Hold on To Beat Nats 11-9
Washington scores 3 in 8th, but falls short

Second baseman Odell Hale (pictured) hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as the Cleveland Indians beat the Washington Nationals by a score of 11 to 9. Belve Bean(1-0) did what was required of him in relief and came away with thewin. He went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 walks. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings was still not enough for Washington to come away with the victory. Ralph Winegarner earned his 1st save. Lefty Stewart(2-3) absorbed the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 13 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.


A's Clawback Against White Sox for 8-6 Win

Doc Cramer had 3 base hits as the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 8 to 6 at Comiskey Park. Bob Kline(2-0) pitched well in relief and was credited with the victory. He surrendered only 3 hits and 1 walk in 4 and 1/3 innings. Chicago was out-hit by Philadelphia, 15 hits to 10. Al Benton recorded his 2nd save. Ted Lyons (1-1) was given the loss. He allowed 8 runs and 15 hits in 9 innings.



Browns defeat Red Sox in Second Straight, 7-5

Browns reserve outfielder Deb Garms had 3 base hits as the St. Louis Browns defeated the Boston RedSox by the score of 7 to 5 at Sportsman's Park. So far, Garms has played in 8 games, this year and is hitting .471 with 18 at bats.

Bobo Newsom (2-2) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 8 hits and 6 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings reducing his ERA from 2.92 to 2.43. St. Louis finished with 10 hits in the victory. Jack Knott recorded his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Gordon Rhodes (2-5).He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Newsom, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
