The incredible New York Giants toppled the Brooklyn Dodgers by a 9 to 5 score
at Polo Grounds.

New York promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they scored 2
runs on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Mel Ott who excited the crowd
when he cracked a two-run shot (his 29th of the season). New York had a
total of 9 hits for the game.

The winning pitcher was Hal Schumacher(12-8) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 2/3
innings. Ray Benge(11-11) was charged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 8
hits in 6 innings.

20,185 fans watched an exciting game at Polo Grounds. The New York Giants
topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

New York brought 2 runs across the plate in the 7th inning with the help of 3
hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Lefty O'Doul who elicited a roar
from the hometown fans when he lined a single bringing in two baserunners.
Brooklyn had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Fred Fitzsimmons(17-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings
and allowing 3 runs. Joe Bowman gained credit for his 1st save. The loss was
charged to Van Lingle Mungo(9-14).

The New York ballclub's record now stands at a league leading 67-39. Brooklyn
has a record of 45-57 after the loss.

Lloyd Waner hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied
impressively to win in dramatic style over Chicago Cubs, 10 to 9.

Pittsburgh came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning with 2
runs using 3 hits. Woody Jensen opened up the inning nicely when he slapped
a one-base hit. After an out was recorded, Gus Suhr came up and he tripled
bringing in a run. Pie Traynor got his turn next, but he was a strikeout
victim. Tommy Thevenow was up next and he was walked intentionally. Earl
Grace came to the plate and slapped a single giving Pittsburgh the win and
sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Chicago
13 to 9.

Ralph Birkofer(11-7) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Charlie
Root(5-3) was the losing pitcher in relief. Traynor was all smiles after the
ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty dim there for a while, but our guys
never gave up - and neither did our fans - they kept cheering us on. What a
sweet win!'

Right fielder Paul Waner blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh
Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs by the score of 14 to 5 at Forbes
Field.

It was a good day for Pittsburgh thanks to Waner. He belted a three-run homer
(his 10th of the season) in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 6th
inning and laced a one-base hit in the 7th inning. Pittsburgh out-hit
Chicago for the game, 17 hits to 12.

Bill Swift(7-8) got the win allowing 5 runs in 8 innings. Guy Bush(9-7) took
the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings.

Curt Davis completed the game without help from the bullpen and second baseman
Lou Chiozza had 4 hits as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston
Braves 6 to 3 at Braves Field.

Boston fell behind quickly as the Philadelphia offense came through in the
first inning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. Philadelphia finished
with 13 hits in the victory.

Davis(9-11) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. Ben Cantwell(6-6)
ended up with the loss. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 13 hits
and no walks.

ST. LOUIS AT CINCINNATI

Center fielder Chick Fullis had 3 base hits and 2 RBI at Crosley Field as the
St. Louis Cardinals beat the woeful Cincinnati Reds in 12 innings by the
count of 5 to 4.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis won the
hard fought contest in the 12th inning. Burgess Whitehead tripled. One out
later, Frankie Frisch stepped in and he hit a deep fly scoring the run. St.
Louis had 13 hits for the afternoon.

Jim Winford(3-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The
loss was charged to Don Brennan(5-2) in relief. He allowed 1 run and 3 hits
in 4 innings.

In a thrilling finish the Chicago White Sox won in dramatic fashion coming







back to beat the Washington Nationals by the count of 6 to 5.















Chicago erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning







with 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Ed Madjeski







started the attack as he lined a one-base hit. One out later, George







Caithamer stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single. Evar Swanson then







doubled which scored a run. Marty Hopkins was up next and he drew a walk.







Al Simmons stepped into the box and doubled giving Chicago the victory and







sending the 2,108 home-town fans home happy. A wild and woolly affair, this







game saw the lead change 5 times.















Phil Gallivan(1-6) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the victory.







Earl Whitehill(13-6) was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings
