Tiger of the Week - Marv Owen

Tiger of the Week

Marv Owen

Marv Owen was Detroit's regular third baseman for most of the 1930s, and possibly the least heralded member of one of baseball's all time great infields. He played from 1931-1940. His first seven seasons were in Detroit, with two years in Chicago (AL) and a final one in Boston (AL). 1934 was Owen's best at the plate (his only year with an above average OPS). He finished 9th in MVP voting that year.

Truly a "team player," Owen was notable for two statistics - being hit by a pitch and sacrifices. He was frequently in the top ten in those two categories.

Owen is best remembered, if at all, for getting into a fight with Joe Medwick in game 7 of the 1934 World Series. Medwick spiked Owen, who took exception. After they were seperated, and Medwick took his outfield post in the next inning, frustrated Detroit fans pelted him with fruit and debris to the point where Medwick was removed by Commissioner Landis (the Cardinals had the game well in hand by then) for his own safety.

dramatic fashion over the Detroit Tigers by a score of 8 to 6 at Navin

Field.

Chicago had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they tallied 4

the home crowd when he banged out a single bringing in two baserunners.

Chicago totaled 13 on the afternoon.

The win went to Harry Kinzy(1-1) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Red

Phillips(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 8 walks in 8 and

2/3 innings.

Jimmy Dykes was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at

bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?

You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what

It was a laugher out at Ebbetts Field. The Boston Braves squad ripped

Brooklyn pitching for a total of 15 runs. Flint Rhem(6-6), with relief help

from Leo Mangum, surrendered 3 runs to Brooklyn.

Buck Jordan was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine

day at their team's expense. He smacked a single in the 1st inning, belted a

three-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 2nd inning and hit a one-base

hit in the 4th inning. Boston provided plenty of action in the 6th inning

which saw them plate 5 runs on 4 hits. For the game Boston out-hit Brooklyn

18 to 13.

Van Lingle Mungo(9-13) ended up with the loss. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings

and surrendered 8 hits and no walks.

Wrigley Field as the Chicago Cubs beat the dreadful Cincinnati Reds 6 to

2.

Chicago drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning

scoring 2 runners on 3 hits. Chicago finished with 13 hits in the victory.

Bush(9-6) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Tony Freitas(3-9)

was the loser. He allowed 11 hits and no walks in 6 innings.

Fred Fitzsimmons pitched a complete game at Baker Bowl as the very talented

New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 2 to 1.

New York went ahead for good in the 4th inning scoring a single run on 2 hits.

Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but New York was able to put down the

rally.

Fitzsimmons(16-6) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. Curt

Davis(8-11) was charged with the loss. 'We didn't get the key hits when we

needed them' Jimmie Wilson said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull

out the win. What can you say?'

NEW YORK AT PHILADELPHIA

Hansen got help from Cy Moore who was credited with his 2nd save. Bell(1-3)

suffered the loss.

The win by Philadelphia is a very welcome one as they have been struggling in

recent days. Their record now stands at 43-59 - only 2-8 in their last ten

games. With this loss, New York has a 7-3 record of late, 65-38 overall.
