Evar Swanson had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox won in



dramatic fashion over the Detroit Tigers by a score of 8 to 6 at Navin



Field.







Chicago had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they tallied 4



runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Swanson who quieted



the home crowd when he banged out a single bringing in two baserunners.



Chicago totaled 13 on the afternoon.







The win went to Harry Kinzy(1-1) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Red



Phillips(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 8 walks in 8 and



2/3 innings.







Jimmy Dykes was all smiles after the game, 'To pull a game out in your last at



bats, is a beautiful feeling - and did you see how quiet it got out there?



You could have heard a pin drop when we took the lead. But, hey, that's what



makes baseball so great - as the great sage Yogi Berra says, 'it's not over



'til its over.'

Jimmie Deshong completed the game without help from the bullpen and Ben



Chapman had 3 base hits and 4 RBI at Yankee Stadium where the New York



Yankees beat the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 9 to 5.







In the bottom of the 2nd inning New York went on top for good scoring a single



run utilizing 2 base hits. New York had 13 hits for the afternoon.







The win was credited to Deshong(5-4) who went the whole way allowing 5 runs.



Bill Dietrich(8-4) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 4



walks in 5 innings.

Oral Hildebrand tossed a complete game and Odell Hale hit one over the fence



and had 3 RBI as the seemingly unstoppable Cleveland Indians topped the St.



Louis Browns by a score of 5 to 4 at League Park.







Hildebrand(9-7) gave a fine effort for Cleveland. He went 9 innings



surrendering 13 hits and 4 walks. St. Louis had a chance in the 9th but they



came up short.







Bump Hadley(6-12) ended up with the loss. Cleveland continued their winning



ways, with their streak now at 7 games and counting.

Wes Ferrell had a strong outing as the sizzling Boston Red Sox defeated the



Washington Nationals by a score of 5 to 1 at Fenway Park.







Washington fell behind quickly as the Boston offense came through in the first



inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. Boston rapped out 12 hits for



the afternoon.







Ferrell(10-3), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Earl



Whitehill(13-8) was the loser. He allowed 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.
