The Washington Nationals nipped the pitiful St. Louis Browns 8 to 7 at







Griffith Stadium in a hard fought contest.















Earl Whitehill(14-11) pitched a fine game. He went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing







9 hits and 7 walks. St. Louis made it exciting in the 9th, but they were







unable to push the needed runs across.















Alex McColl recorded the save, his 10th. Dick Coffman(4-11) was hit with the







loss. He was touched for 12 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.















'You have to give St. Louis credit, they fought us tough to the end' Joe







Cronin said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the







victory.'

In a close game the Detroit Tigers got by the Philadelphia Athletics by the







score of 5 to 3.















Detroit scored the decisive runs in a big top of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs







utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Ray Hayworth started the







rally when he drew a walk. Jo-Jo White struck out, unable to help the rally.







Mickey Cochrane then slapped a single. Charlie Gehringer came up and he







drew a walk to load the bases. Goose Goslin stepped into the box and slapped







a base-hit which was good for two runs. Goslin took second on the throw.







Detroit won despite being out-hit by Philadelphia 12 hits to 7.















The victory went to Elden Auker(12-7) who went 8 innings, allowing 3 runs.







Luke Hamlin gained credit for his 3rd save. The losing pitcher was Sugar







Cain(14-9).

Louis Cardinals defeated the ice-cold Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 10 to 3















at Sportsman's Park.































Brooklyn was unable to claim the lead after St. Louis went ahead in the 3rd















inning scoring 3 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Pepper Martin started the















inning off right when he reached on an error. Jack Rothrock was next and he















stroked a single. Frisch then slapped a one-base hit plating a run. After















an out was recorded, Rip Collins stepped in and he laced a single as another















two runners scored. That was all the runs Walker(10-3) needed. St. Louis















managed 14 in their victory.































Johnny Babich(0-10) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits















and 3 walks in 6 innings. It was another victory for St. Louis at















Sportsman's Park. Now their winning streak stands at 7 games. Frisch was















happy with his team's performance of late - 'They're playing solid ball right















now' he said. 'Let's hope they can stay focused.'

one-base hit. Hack was safe at second on a stolen base. Chuck Klein then















laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kiki Cuyler came up and he would hit into a















fielders choice resulting in a mighty exciting win for Chicago and the 18,659















home town fans in attendance. Both teams ended up with 12 on the afternoon.































Charlie Root(6-3) allowed no runs in 2/3 of an inning, and picked up the















victory. The losing pitcher was Al Smith(3-6) in relief. He pitched 1/3 of
