NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 National League Date: 8/3/1934

NEW YORK AT BOSTON

Giants.......... 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 2 5 1

Braves.......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 3 0 - 4 6 1

Win:Brandt(7-12) Loss:Parmelee(5-3)

Homeruns- T.Jackson(11th), H.Leiber(4th)

Ed Brandt completed the game without help from the bullpen and Les Mallon

collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI at Braves Field as the Boston

Braves beat the New York Giants 4 to 2.

Brandt(7-12) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed only 5 hits

and 1 walk in 9 innings and surrendered 2 homeruns. Boston had only 6 hits

for the afternoon.

Roy Parmelee(5-3) was given the loss. Bill Terry was obviously impressed with

the pitching of Brandt, 'That guy made us look a little silly out there this

afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everything was working for

him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out of his system.'

PHILADELPHIA AT BROOKLYN

Phillies........ 4 0 1 1 2 5 0 0 0 - 13 15 1

Dodgers......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 - 3 5 1

Win:Johnson(3-4) Loss:Babich(0-7)

Dolph Camilli had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies ballclub

embarrassed the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 13 to 3.

Camilli was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day

at their team's expense. He doubled scoring a run in the 1st inning, tripled

in the 3rd inning, tripled which plated a run in the 5th inning and tripled

in the 8th inning. Philadelphia had 15 hits for the afternoon while Brooklyn

had 5.

Syl Johnson(3-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 2/3 innings and

allowing 3 runs. Johnny Babich(0-7) was hit with the loss. He was touched

for 13 hits and 5 walks in 6 innings.

'It's been a rough ride lately, but this was a good win for us' said Jimmie

Wilson, 'Maybe this will put us back on track.'

PITTSBURGH AT CINCINNATI

Pirates......... 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 - 4 9 0

Reds............ 2 4 0 0 0 1 0 0 - 7 10 1

Win:Frey(4-11) Loss:Lucas(6-7) Save:Kolp(4th)

Homeruns- G.Slade(6th)

At Crosley Field the Cincinnati Reds scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning and

outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 4.

Cincinnati tallied 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning when they had 5 base

hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Benny Frey(4-11) and

Cincinnati. That was all the run support Frey required. Ray Kolp relieved

and was untouched by Pittsburgh as he recorded the save, his 4th.

The loss was charged to Red Lucas(6-7). Cincinnati, who had been struggling

lately, moved their record to 35-62. They are now 2-8 in their last ten

games. With the loss, Pittsburgh has a record of 4-6 lately, 51-44 overall.

ST. LOUIS AT CHICAGO

Cardinals....... 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 4 0 0 - 6 12 1

Cubs............ 3 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 3 - 9 11 1

Win:Root(5-2) Loss:Mooney(3-6)

Homeruns- C.Root(2nd)

The Chicago Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings by a score of

9 to 6 at Wrigley Field.

The score was tied at 6 after nine. Chicago won it in the 10th inning. After

an out was recorded, Charlie Grimm started the rally when he drew a walk.

Stan Hack stepped into the batter's box and he drew a walk. Charlie Root

then belted a three-run homer making Chicago the victors to the delight of

the home town faithful. Chicago had 11 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Root(5-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.

Jim Mooney(3-6) was tagged with the loss in relief. He was not very

effective, surrendering 5 runs in 3 and 1/3 innings.

With this win, Chicago has a 58-40 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With

the loss, the St. Louis ballclub's record is 55-42.
