Dizzy Dean got most of the pre-game attention, but it was Jack Salveson (pictured) who went the distance for the win and sparked the winning rally as the New York Giants outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 5 to 2.
New York scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning, scoring 3 runs using 3 hits. Salveson himself led off and started the rally when he doubled. Two outs later Bill Terry stepped in and tripled scoring Salveson. Mel Ott then cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season). New York had a total of 7 hits for the game. Salveson(1-0), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Dean(2-4) was the loser. He allowed 5 runs and 7 hits in 9 innings.

Paul Waner (pictured) had 3 base hits, boosting his average to .382, and Red Lucas tossed a complete game at Forbes Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 4. Philadelphia was unable to recover after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 2 base hits. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Lucas(2-1) allowed 4 runs on the game. Curt Davis (2-2) suffered the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.

Guy Bush blanked Brooklyn in a very well-pitched complete game as the Chicago Cubs clobbered the outmatched Brooklyn Dodgers, 13 to 0. Bush (4-1) (pictured) was very good in the win. He didn't allow much, just 6 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings improving his ERA from 3.63 to 2.89. Chicago banged out 15 on the afternoon. 'Boom-Boom' Beck (2-1) was hit with the loss. His biggest problem was control as he allowed 5 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Chick Hafey (pictured) collected 2 extra-base hits at Crosley Field as the Cincinnati Reds beat the reeling Boston Braves by the count of 7 to 2. Ray Kolp(1-1) pitched a fine game. He was reached for 7 hits and 2 walks in 7and 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA from 4.05 to 1.93. Boston was out-hit by Cincinnati, 11 hits to 8. Ed Brandt (2-3) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
