NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 American League Date: 8/15/1934

DETROIT AT NEW YORK

Tigers.......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 5 1

Yankees......... 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 2 7 1

Win:Gomez(15-9) Loss:Hogsett(5-3)

Homeruns- B.Ruth(15th)

Lefty Gomez tossed a complete game at Yankee Stadium where the New York

Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 2 to 1.

Gomez(15-9) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't allow much,

just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. New York finished with 7 hits in the

victory.

The losing pitcher was Chief Hogsett(5-3) in relief. He surrendered 3 hits

and no walks in 1 inning.

DETROIT AT NEW YORK

Tigers.......... 0 1 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 - 4 10 0

Yankees......... 0 1 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 - 3 9 0

Win:Rowe(14-5) Loss:Ruffing(10-9)

Homeruns- H.Greenberg(15th), L.Gehrig(35th)

Schoolboy Rowe went the distance and Hank Greenberg hit one over the fence and

had 4 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees by a score of 4 to

3.

The New York fans didn't appreciate the big day Greenberg had. He doubled

bringing in a run in the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer (his 15th of

the season) in the 6th inning and stroked a one-base hit in the 8th inning.

Detroit had 10 hits for the afternoon.

The victory was credited to Rowe(14-5) who went the distance, allowing 3 runs.

Red Ruffing(10-9) was the loser. He surrendered 4 runs and 10 hits in 8

innings.

The Detroit ballclub's record now stands at 60-50. New York will hope that

this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent 8-2 run - and not a start of a new

trend.

ST. LOUIS AT BOSTON

Browns.......... 1 0 0 1 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 7 18 3

Red Sox......... 2 0 0 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 - 6 13 1

Win:Andrews(4-7) Loss:Welch(9-6)

First baseman Jack Burns had 5 hits and scored 3 times at Fenway Park where

the St. Louis Browns beat the Boston Red Sox in 16 innings by the score of 7

to 6.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. St. Louis came out the victor

in the 16th inning. Burns banged out a single. A balk was called. Roy

Pepper then delivered a base-hit scoring the run. A wild and woolly affair,

this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Ivy Andrews(4-7) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

Johnny Welch(9-6) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 1 run and 5 hits

in 4 and 1/3 innings.

CLEVELAND AT WASHINGTON

Indians......... 0 1 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 - 3 11 1

Nationals....... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 - 2 9 0

Win:Harder(12-4) Loss:Stewart(3-12)

Mel Harder allowed Walter Johnson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game

and catcher Frankie Pytlak had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians

outscored the Washington Nationals 3 to 2.

Harder(12-4) pitched well for Cleveland in their victory. He surrendered 9

hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Washington threatened in the 9th but

Cleveland was able to put down the rally.

Lefty Stewart(3-12) was given the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and

4 walks in 7 innings. 'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us

today' Joe Cronin said. 'We take these games one day at a time, but this one

was hard to take.'

Billy Herman had 3 base hits and Guy Bush allowed Charlie Grimm to rest his

bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Chicago Cubs topped the Boston Braves

in 11 innings by a score of 4 to 3 at Wrigley Field.

The score was knotted at 3 after nine innings. Chicago ended up winning it in

the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Herman tripled. Woody English

came next and he would hit into a fielders choice making Chicago the victors

to the delight of the home town faithful. Chicago managed 11 in their

victory.

Bush(10-7) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 3 runs. Bob

Smith(4-3) suffered the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run and 1 hit in 1 and

1 walk in 8 and 2/3 innings and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'. St. Louis

threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Curt Davis recorded his 2nd save. Dazzy Vance(3-6) was the losing pitcher.

'We won because we did the little things right.' Jimmie Wilson said after the

game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get

in close games we don't make mistakes.'

Lombardi slapped a one-base hit. Adam Comorosky was next and he stroked a

base-hit. Two outs later Gordon Slade stepped in and he stroked a single

making Cincinnati the winners and sending the 2,453 fans home happy. The

game was a scoreless duel until the 8th inning.

Tony Freitas(4-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing

no runs. Ray Benge(11-12) was given the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 1 walk

in the 1st inning, delivered a base-hit scoring two baserunners in the 4th

inning, doubled in the 6th inning and delivered a solo blast (his 1st of the

season) in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th

but they came up short.

Carl Hubbell(19-6) picked up the victory, allowing 11 runs in 8 and 1/3
