NL Player of the Week - Billy Herman

NL Player of the Week

William Jennings Bryan "Billy" Herman

A mainstay with the Cubs from 1931 through 1941, Herman played a few more years, mainly with Brooklyn, before retiring in 1947. Herman was inconsistent, with some more mediocre years mixed in, but he was in his prime from 1935 through 1937. With the Cubs, Herman was a second baseman, but shifted around the infield later in his career.

Herman was a 12 time All Star. Despite his less than steller lifetime OPS+ of 112, Herman had other interesting features at a time when less was expected of infielders at the plate (Cal Ripken is widely credited with the notion that one could be an excellent middle infielder AND yield a strong bat).

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1975.

Dizzy Dean was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 4 hits as the

blistering-hot St. Louis Cardinals defeated the struggling Cincinnati Reds in

10 innings by a score of 1 to 0 at Sportsman's Park.

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. St. Louis won the game in

the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Ernie Orsatti slapped a one-base

hit. Leo Durocher stepped up next and he delivered a single, and an error

was also committed, giving St. Louis the win much to the delight of the home

town crowd. St. Louis rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon.

It was the 8th shutout of the year for Dean(22-10). Benny Frey(5-18) was hit

with the loss. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned

run in his 9 and 1/3 innings of work.
