SABR BIO PROJECT

If you're unaware, the Society of Baseball Research (SABR) has an ongoing project to create biographies of major league baseball players.

There's plenty of opportunity for writing if you're interested. New biographies are posted daily. For instance, NY Giants pitcher Hal Schumaker, who's 19-10 with a 2.95 ERA has just been posted.

Les Tietje threw a complete game shutout at League Park where the Chicago

White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians by the score of 1 to 0.

Tietje(7-13) was in control of the game from the outset. He surrendered only

5 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. Cleveland threatened in the 9th but their

rally came up short.

The losing pitcher was Mel Harder(16-9). He pitched 9 innings and surrendered

Ben Chapman had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the New York Yankees defeated the

Washington Nationals by the score of 11 to 8 at Griffith Stadium.

Chapman was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided

much of the offense for the visitors. He doubled in the 2nd inning, laced a

base-knock in the 3rd inning, tripled which was good for two runs in the 5th

inning and doubled resulting in a run in the 6th inning. Washington had a

chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

The win went to Johnny Broaca(15-7) who allowed 8 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings.

Danny Macfayden recorded the save, his 2nd. Syd Cohen(0-3) was hit with the

loss. He was unable to control the New York offense and allowed 13 hits and

5 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Jimmie Deshong closed it out for New York as the New York Yankees defeated the

Washington Nationals 8 to 5 at Griffith Stadium.

New York came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning scoring 3 runs using

3 hits. Babe Ruth led off the inning for New York when he drew a walk. Don

Heffner next to the plate and he stroked a single. Heffner took second on

the throw. Frank Crosetti then would hit into a fielders choice which plated

a run. Red Rolfe stepped in and he reached on an error scoring another run.

After an out was recorded, Lou Gehrig came up and he lined a one-base hit

scoring the final run of the inning. For the game New York out-hit

Washington 12 to 8.

The winning pitcher was Danny Macfayden(2-8) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3

innings. Deshong was credited with his 5th save. Earl Whitehill(15-14) took

Pinky Whitney cracked a homer and had 2 RBI and Huck Betts came through with a

solid 9 innings at Baker Bowl as the Boston Braves, running on all cylinders,

ripped the hapless Philadelphia Phillies by a large 16 to 2 margin.

Whitney led the offense for Boston. He stroked a single knocking in a run in

the 2nd inning, delivered a solo blast (his 16th of the season) in the 4th

inning and doubled in the 8th inning. Boston lit up the scoreboard in the

8th inning scoring 4 runs. Offensively, Boston was a juggernaut. They

scored in 6 separate innings.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Brooklyn came out on top in

the 10th inning. After two were out Tony Cuccinello initiated the scoring

spurt when he banged out a single. Taylor stepped up next and he stroked a

one-base hit. Joe Stripp then drew a walk to load the bases. Al Lopez

stepped in and he doubled, and an error was also committed, clearing all

three ducks off the pond. Brooklyn had a total of 13 hits for the game.

Mungo(12-21), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Carl

Hubbell(24-10) was the loser in relief. He was knocked around pretty good,
