July 22nd, 1934 - AL Player of the Week - Al Simmons

AL Player of the Week

Al Simmons

As we have seen, the 1930s was an era of baseball legends. Both the #1 and #2 (by Bill James's rankings) first basemen, Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx, are the AL's leading sluggers in our replay. Three of his top ten catchers, Mickey Cochrane, Bill Dickey and Gabby Hartnett are behind the plate. Arky Vaughan, Joe Cronin and Luke Appling are all at Shortstop.

Where are the great outfielders? In right field, we have Mel Ott and Paul Waner. The only "top ten" center fielder to play in the 1930s, Joe DiMaggio, won't show up until 1936, and is generally thought of as a player of the 1940s. Al Simmons, our player of the week, is the only top ten rated player in left.

Born in 1902, Simmons (HA7) played Major League baseball from 1924 through 1944 (except in 1942). He played outfield for Philadelphia from 1924 through 1932, when he was sold off by a Depression strapped Connie Mack to Chicago, where he played for three seasons, including the year of our replay (1934). He moved to Detroit for one year in 1936, and then Washington. He played a few years in the NL, and then back to the AL for Philadephia, Boston for one year in 1943 and finally back to the A's one last, brief time in 1944.

From 1925 through 1934, Simmons put up monster numbers (top 5 in slugging % every year from 1925 through 1932) , and would finish in the top 5 for MVP a few times, although he never captured the honor. Still, a decade's worth of being one of the very best, plus an overall OPS+ of 132 was good enough to earn him a top spot among Bill James's ranking of left fielders.

Like many players, Simmons was superstitious. He once broke out of a slump by putting his hat on before any other article of clothing, which caused the clubhouse to break out in laughter. The next day, Simmons had four hits. From then on, it was "hat first."

Simmons was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1953.

Schoolboy Rowe held Philadelphia to 3 hits and shortstop Billy Rogell had 2

base hits and 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers crushed the Philadelphia Athletics

14 to 2.

Detroit promptly took the lead in their half of the first as they ripped

Philadelphia for 7 runs on 8 hits. That was all the offense they were to

need. Detroit rapped out 17 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Rowe(11-3) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Johnny

Marcum(9-6) was charged with the loss. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and

surrendered 7 hits and no walks.

Moose Solters hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the

Cleveland Indians in 10 innings by the score of 8 to 7 at League Park.

The score was knotted at 7 after nine innings. Boston came out the victor in

the 10th inning. Max Bishop drew a walk. Billy Werber came next and he

doubled. Belve Bean then uncorked a pitch that was ruled a passed ball

scoring the run. The Cleveland bats were silent in the bottom of the 10th.

The win was credited to Gordon Rhodes(8-10) who went 4 innings allowing 5

runs. Bean(1-4) took the loss in relief. The Boston ballclub's record now

stands at a league leading 52-35. With this loss, Cleveland has a 5-5 record

of late, 42-42 overall.

the New York Yankees by the count of 5 to 1.

Bonura provided much of the offense. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st

inning and smashed a two-run homer (his 19th of the season) in the 3rd

inning. Chicago and New York each finished the afternoon with 5 hits.

Jones(7-10) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Johnny Broaca(5-3)

NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 National League Date: 7/21/1934

CINCINNATI AT NEW YORK

Reds............ 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1 4 1

Giants.......... 0 0 2 0 2 0 3 0 - 7 12 0

Win:Parmelee(3-2) Loss:Johnson(5-9)

Homeruns- W.Schulmerich(3rd)

Roy Parmelee had a strong outing as the New York Giants outscored the

Cincinnati Reds 7 to 1.

New York jumped on top to stay in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they

tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. New

York had 12 hits for the afternoon.

Parmelee(3-2) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Si Johnson(5-9)

suffered the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Bob O'Farrell lamented, 'Parmelee was really aggressive today. He kept coming

after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down one after

another - like so many bowling pins!'

ST. LOUIS AT BOSTON

Cardinals....... 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 - 3 9 2

Braves.......... 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 - 1 7 2

Win:Carleton(12-5) Loss:Rhem(4-5)

Tex Carleton allowed Frankie Frisch to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete

game at Braves Field where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Boston Braves 3

to 1.

Carleton(12-5) was very good in the win. He allowed only 7 hits and 2 walks

in 9 innings. Boston had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up

short.

Flint Rhem(4-5) was the loser. Bill McKechnie was clearly disappointed after

the game. 'It was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have

had this one.'
