Right fielder John Stone homered as the Washington Nationals defeated the

Detroit Tigers by the score of 8 to 6 at Griffith Stadium.



Tommy Thomas(3-3) gave a fine effort for Washington. He went 7 and 1/3

innings surrendering 6 hits and 6 walks. Detroit had a chance in the 9th but

they came up short.



Vic Sorrell(4-5) was given the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits

and 2 walks in 6 innings. 'Anytime you lose it hurts,' said Mickey Cochrane

'but it's losing the close ones that really hurt.'

Charlie Gehringer had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the Detroit

Tigers won in dramatic fashion coming back to beat the Washington Nationals

by the count of 9 to 8.



Detroit won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs

utilizing 4 base hits. Goose Goslin opened up the inning nicely when he

doubled. Gehringer stepped into the batter's box and he slapped a one-base

hit plating a run. Billy Rogell then smacked a single. Rogell took second

on the throw. After an out was recorded, Ray Hayworth stepped up to the

plate and he lined a single scoring the final run of the inning. This was

the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.



Chief Hogsett(3-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 3 innings. Alex McColl(3-1)

suffered the loss in relief. McColl was feeling apologetic in the locker

room, 'I sure let that one get away. What a miserable feeling to let the

guys down; and our fans. One minute things are looking great, then. BOOM,

it's over with! I just hope I get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

Roy Johnson had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Johnny Welch pitched 9 strong

innings as the sizzling Boston Red Sox beat the ice-cold Chicago White Sox by

a score of 7 to 1.



Boston went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning when they scored 2

runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Johnson who brought a

roar from the partisan Fenway Park fans when he doubled which was good for

two runs. Boston had 9 hits for the afternoon.



Welch(7-1) allowed 1 run on the game. Les Tietje(2-4) was given the loss. He

was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.



Bucky Harris was very impressed with his pitcher, Welch, 'He had unusually

good pitch placement this afternoon. It was almost unfair - but a beautiful

game to watch from where I sat'

Johnny Murphy pitched a complete game and Babe Ruth slammed a homerun and

scored 3 times as the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians 6 to 4

at Yankee Stadium.



Murphy(5-4) delivered a fine performance for New York. He went 9 innings

surrendering 6 hits and 2 walks. New York totaled 10 on the afternoon.



Oral Hildebrand(4-7) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 2

walks in 6 innings.

as the Philadelphia Athletics topped the St. Louis Browns by a score of 6 to

2 at Shibe Park.



Dietrich(5-1) gave a fine effort for Philadelphia. He went 9 innings allowing

6 hits and 5 walks seeing his ERA drop from 3.48 to 3.16. Philadelphia

managed 11 in their victory.



Bump Hadley(3-8) suffered the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 9

hits and 3 walks.

George Blaeholder was able to finish what he started and was credited with a

complete game as the St. Louis Browns outscored the Philadelphia Athletics 8

to 6.



Blaeholder(3-8) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He surrendered 11 hits and 2

walks in 9 innings. The Philadelphia bats were silent in the bottom of the

9th.



The losing pitcher was Joe Cascarella(5-4). The St. Louis ballclub's record

Larry French pitched 9 strong innings at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh

Pirates won a thriller over the Boston Braves in, 2 to 1.



The game was decided in the 9th inning. Arky Vaughan doubled. Gus Suhr came

to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Pie Traynor then delivered a

single giving Pittsburgh the victory and sending the 11,145 home-town fans

home happy. Pittsburgh had a total of 9 hits for the game.



French(7-4) lasted until the end allowing 1 run for the win. Ed Brandt(3-9)

ended up with the loss. The Pittsburgh ballclub's record now stands at

29-27. With the loss, Boston has a record of 3-7 lately, 22-37 overall.

Mark Koenig blasted a homerun and scored 3 times as the Cincinnati Reds won at

Crosley Field in dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Phillies, the final

score, 7 to 6.



The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 9th. After an out was

recorded, Chick Hafey drew a walk. After another out, Linc Blakely came to

the plate and drew a walk. Ernie Lombardi then laced a base-knock making

Cincinnati the winners and sending the 6,042 fans home happy. Overall

Cincinnati out-hit Philadelphia 15 to 10.



The victory went to Dazzy Vance(2-2) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs.
