White Sox Shut Down Tigers
Earnshaw shows flashes of old brilliance in 7-4 win

George Earnshaw whiffed 10 batters as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 7 to 4 at Navin Field. Earnshaw (4-6) pitched well for Chicago in their victory. He surrendered 9 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings. Both teams totaled 9 on the afternoon. Harry Kinzy recorded the save, his 1st. Firpo Marberry(3-5) was hit with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 innings. 'He was really impressive today,' Marberry said of his counterpart. 'Our guys were just swinging at air.'

Higgins delivers for visiting team

Third baseman Pinky Higgins jacked one out of the ballyard and had 2 RBI asthe Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Yankees by the score of 5 to3 at Yankee Stadium. In the 7th inning Philadelphia went on top for good scoring a single runutilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Eric McNair banged out asingle. Bing Miller stepped up next and he drew a walk. Higgins then lined a one-base hit scoring the run. Higgins took second on the throw. OverallPhiladelphia out-hit New York 10 to 4. Johnny Marcum(5-3) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory.Marcum got help from Ed Lagger who was credited with his 1st save. LeftyGomez(6-5) suffered the loss. He gave up 10 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. With this win, Philadelphia has a 24-21 record. They have been 3-7 lately. New York has a record of 23-22 after the loss.

Wells shuts out Indians through 8

Jack Burns had 2 base hits as the St. Louis Browns defeated the ClevelandIndians by a score of 4 to 2 at League Park. In the top of the 7th inning St. Louis scored 2 runs with the help of 3 hits.They would be enough to earn the win. St. Louis had a total of 8 hits forthe game. Ed Wells(2-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings andallowing 2 runs. Jack Knott was credited with his 3rd save. WillisHudlin(3-5) absorbed the loss. For St. Louis the victory was a welcome one, indeed. They had been strugglingin their last ten games with a disappointing 2-8 record. With the loss, the Cleveland ballclub's record is 21-21.

In a close game the Washington Nationals got by the Boston Red Sox by thescore of 6 to 4. Boston was unable to recover after Washington went ahead in the top of the 5thinning as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. Boston had a chance in the 9thbut they came up short. The victory went to Jack Russell(2-1) who went 8 innings, allowing 2 runs.Fritz Ostermueller(1-6) was charged with the loss. 'I just wanted to give myteam a chance to win.' said Russell, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
