Thank you and goodbye

As the Cardinals' train heads home through the October night, some of the players are already asleep in their berths in the Pullman cars, weary from too much "celebrating" after Game Seven. Others, such as Dizzy Dean, Rip Collins, and Joe Medwick are still going at it in the dining car, which the train has kept open late exclusively for the Cards. Manager Frankie Frisch was the first to turn off the lights in his compartment.

Teetotaling team President Branch Rickey is in another car all together.

As the train winds its way through the country side, I'd just like to thank everyone who came along for the ride.

It's been fun. I hope you enjoyed yourself as well.

October 10th, 1934 - World Series Game Seven

Cardinals Are World Champions of 1934 Baseball Season!

Dizzy Dean wins third game of Series, yielding only two runs. Medwick has key triple to power 4 run 5th inning.

Dizzy Dean may not have been the National League's Cy Young winner, but he proved himself perhaps the most important player in baseball this year when he pitched the St. Louis Cardinals to a seventh game win in the World Series. Dean was carried off the field after pitching the final out in the 9th inning (pictured).

Pitching on only a single day's rest, Dean yielded only 8 hits and two runs in a game he pitched through the end. The Tigers were able to score in the 7th on a solo home run by Goose Goslin and a basehit by Marv Owen to score Hank Greenberg. Other than that, they were largely ineffective against Dean.

At the same time, Tommy Bridges was unable to provide effective relief when he was called into action in the 5th, which proved to be the decisive at bat for St. Louis.

NL Player of the Week - Lloyd Waner

NL Player of the Week

Lloyd Waner

Our last biography is of Lloyd Waner (HA50), the brother of Paul Waner. Like Paul, Lloyd was an outfielder for the Pirates and entered the HOF. Unlike Paul (but like many 1930s era HOF'ers) his credentials are a little questionable by today's standards. It might be that batting was mostly measured by average in the late 1960s, whereas today we look more closely at "OPS" which is combined on base percentage and slugging percentage.

Lloyd played for Pittsburgh from 1927 through 1940. In his BEST year, his OPS+ was only 115. Unlike Paul, he was a contact hitter with a high batting average and OBP, but rarely hit more than a single. In an 18 year career, he only hit 27 home runs. On the other hand, he only struck out 173 times, or less than 10 times per season. A speedster, Lloyd's ability was to get on base for Paul to drive him in, and he and Paul were known to opposing fans as "little poison" and "big poison." Bill James also estimates he was consistently among the best fielders in the NL all throughout the 1930s.

Waner was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967. His HOF entry makes the case for Waner's intangibles (speed and fielding) but it's unlikely we'll ever see another HOF'er selected with a lifetime OPS+ of 99.

Baseball in the 1930s...

At the beginning of the season, I wrote an essay on baseball during the Great Depression. I've substantially rewritten it to reflect what I've learned in the course of this replay.

If you're interested, please take the time to read (or re-read) it and let me know what you think.
