Things I've Learned About Baseball While Writing This Blog

Some Interesting Things I've Learned While Writing This Blog

As I wrap things up at Depression Era Baseball, I thought I'd just list a few things I've discovered while playing this replay and researching the era in general (in no particular order):

1. While we tend to believe that player mobility is mostly a product of free agency, and that "in the good old days" most players stayed with one team, this doesn't seem to be true. While conducting my 1934 replay, I also replayed 1931. A great many players were on other teams only three years earlier. This didn't include only journeymen, but truly great players like Rogers Hornsby, Chick Hafey, Chuck Klein and Stan Hack.

2. Baseball players did not "work out" in the 1930s, or seek to develop their physique. At the time, it was thought to be detrimental to their flexibility, which was thought to be more important in a baseball player. This seems to be the mentality in Japan. New Royals' skipper Trey Hillman will reportedly use flexibility training as a way of improving his team's conditioning for 2008.

3. Boy, the Cubs had some great teams in the 1930s. They never won the World Series, so we don't hear much about them, but they won 3 pennants and finished out of the top 3 only 1 time in the decade.

4. The 1930s was the era of nicknames - the weird players were the ones that didn't have one.

5. The public persona of Dizzy Dean was highly misleading and a deliberate distortion of a man who realized he needed a "character" to sell himself. In public, he was a colorful country rube, who couldn't pronounce the King's English and couldn't care less. In private, though, he was a well spoken, refined family man and friend.

6. The 1930s teemed with great players, many of whom we are familiar. Many others, however, such as Lon Warneke, Chuck Klein, and Red Ruffing deserve to be much better known. Part of the problem is that there aren't a lot of books on the era. A new, comprehensive treatment of baseball during this era is definitely needed.

7. In response to the Yankees' dominance at the end of the decade, the AL adopted a rule prohibiting other teams from trading with the league champion of the previous year. The champion was only allowed to pick up player off waivers. This rule prompted NL executive Branch Rickey to remark, "They've gone communistic in that league. The rule was repealed at the All Star break in 1941 when it was clear that, without Hank Greenberg, the reigning AL champion Detroit Tigers didn't pose a threat to anyone.

8. The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) has a fascinating biography project underway.

Rowe Dominates Cards on Mound, at Plate; Tigers pitcher yields 5 hits while notching 2 to send Series to final game

Tigers pitcher Schoolboy Rowe put on a clinic both on the mound and at the plate yesterday, ensuring a final game today at Navin Field. Rowe yielded only 5 hits and 1 run to St. Louis, while hitting a home run to send the Tigers ahead for good in the second inning.

Elden Auker will take the mound today for Detroit against Dizzy Dean, who will start his third game of the Series, for St. Louis.

Schoolboy Rowe delivered 9 solid innings as the Detroit Tigers defeated the

St. Louis Cardinals by the score of 6 to 1 at Navin Field.

Rowe(1-1) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the St.

Louis batters. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings reducing his

ERA from 4.00 to 2.50. Detroit had 11 hits for the afternoon.

The loss was charged to Paul Dean(0-2). He allowed 10 hits and 4 walks in 7

and 1/3 innings.

October 8th, 1934 - World Series Game Five

The Cardinals and Tigers, two of the most potent offenses in baseball, let loose with 23 runs and 30 hits yesterday afternoon, with the Cardinals coming away with a 16-7 win. The Cards started in the second inning, scoring 4 off Tommy Bridges. Although he yielded 7 runs himself, Dizzy Dean stayed for the entire game game for St. Louis, striking out 8 Tiger hitters. Hank Greenberg, whose two run home run won game 4 for Detroit accounted for 3 of them.

Pepper Martin had 4 hits and 5 RBI to spark the Cardinals' offense. Cardinal first baseman Rip Collins also had his second home run of the series. The St. Louis faithful cheered Martin on as he banged out a single good for two runs in the 2nd inning, doubled resulting in a run in the 5th inning, tripled in the 7th inning and slapped a base hit scoring two baserunners in the 8th inning.

St. Louis lit up the score board in the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on 6 hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5 hits. St. Louis totaled 19 hits on the afternoon. Dean (2-0) got the victory, allowing 7 runs for the game. Tommy Bridges(1-1) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 4 runs and 5 hits in 4 innings.
The Series will resume today in Detroit with Schoolboy Rowe, loser of game two, taking on Paul Dean, loser of game three.

October 1st, 1934 - Book Review - Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms

Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms

Eldon Auker

pp. 212 + index

Former (and recently late) Tiger pitcher Elden Auker promises his reader a chance to "turn off you cellular phone, remove the battery from your beeper, inform your personal trainer you won't be making it in this week, put on your slippers, settle back into a recliner, don your reading glasses and take a trip back in time..."

Auker's book provides many great tales about the best and worst in baseball. Auker himself is no romantic: "you can go on believing that we didn't care about money and played only for the romance of it..." he says. Instead, Auker shares stories about the famous shortstop who was blackballed in the AL after being caught stealing from the Babe, and other sordid stories, as well as inspiring ones, such as as his recollections of Lou Gehrig. Auker is also free with his opinions - Pete Rose should never be allowed anywhere near the game, he says, but "Shoeless Joe" get a raw deal in Auker's book. Auker also paints a vivid portrait of his favorite, Mickey Cochrane (the "perfect player and perfect manager in the perfect situation").

The book contains stories about players that I have yet to see in other books. More importantly, he explains how the Tigers transfored from a middle of the pack team in 1933 to pennant winners in 1934 and world champions in 1935. Obviously, getting new talent in Cochrane and Goslin helped, but as a Tigers' pitcher, Auker shares how Cochrane's catching raised their pitching staff to the next level as well. Also interesting is a portrait of Dizzy Dean very different than his traditional depiction (Dean's "Rube" persona was a calculated act).

One nice touch are the occassional historic side notes, presumably thrown in by Auker's co-author Tom Keegan. They cover topics such as nicknames and sportswriting during the era Auker covers. More of these would have been great. In short, the only thing that this book lacks is more of what it already has.

Rating: **** (buy it new) for Tigers' fans and *** (buy it used) for all others.

A promotional video for the book can be found here. It has some great footage of Auker's submarine pitching style.

October 6th, 1934 - World Series Game Four

Tigers Win in Dramatic 9th Inning Comeback to Knot Series! Walker doubles home game winner with two outs!

Detroit Outfielder Gee Walker hasn't been a household name this year. But, today every schoolboy in Detroit knows the Tigers reserve outfielder now. With two out and the Cards appearing to be set to take a 3-1 Series lead, the Tigers managed to get Marv Owen and Pete Fox aboard. Walker was then sent in to pinch hit for pitcher Chief Hogsett. With a 2-1 count, Walker laced a Tex Carlton curve into the corner to plate two runs. Carl Fischer then set the Cards down in the 9th.

In a thriller the Detroit Tigers staged a dramatic comeback then held on to

win over the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 4 to 3 at Sportsman's

Park.

Detroit won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.

After two outs Marv Owen started the attack as he slapped a one-base hit.

Pete Fox next to the plate and he slapped a single. Gee Walker then doubled

driving home two runs. Detroit won despite being out-hit by St. Louis 13

hits to 8.

Chief Hogsett(1-0) was the winner allowing 2 runs in 3 innings. Hogsett got

help from Carl Fischer who was credited with his 1st save. Tex Carleton(0-1)

took the loss. He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 1

walk.

Carleton was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get

away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One

minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I

get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'

October 6th, 1934 - World Series Game Three

Tigers Stage Comeback, Win in Extras, 5-4; Greenberg hits massive shot to left in 10th to narrow deficit.

Errors played a key role this afternoon as the St. Louis Cardinals allowed the Detroit Tigers to slip the noose and avoid being down three games to none.

Down 3-0 in the fifth, with one out and one on, Tiger pitcher Tommy Bridges lofted a ball to left that looked like a sure out. Cardinal left fielder Joe Medwick lost it in the sun, however, and let the ball drop. Because he could not chance a catch, Pete Fox only made it to second, however. After another out, Mickey Cochrane hit a ball in the hole to second. Cardinal second baseman Frankie Frisch hurried his throw, which went over first baseman Rip Collins' head and into the stands, allowing two runs to score and place Cochrane on second. The next batter, Charlie Gehringer, doubled him in, tying the score at 3, where it remained until the 10th inning, when Hank Greenberg blasted the game winning home run.

The Tigers will try to even the series this afternoon at Sportsman's Park. Elden Auker (16-8, 4.37) will face off against Tex Carlton (20-6, 3.15).

October 5th, 1934 - World Series Game Two

Cards Take Two Game Lead in Series! Haines throws three brilliant innings to preserve narrow St. Louis victory; Bridges to Start in St. Louis today as Tigers try to rally

The Tigers were unable to hold a one run leading after seven innings today, as St. Louis rallied for two in the 8th to overcome the Tigers slim lead and take a two game lead in the World Series.
Although Tiger hurler Schoolboy Rowe had a good day, it was not enough as the Tigers managed only three runs on the afternoon.
Things don't get any easier today as the Tigers face Paul Dean (16-9, 3.48), the NL Rookie of the Year and younger brother of Cardinal Ace Dizzy Dean. Tommy Bridges (19-15, 3.29) will take the mound for Detroit.

Rip Collins again led the St. Louis attack. He had two doubles, a sacrifice and a walk for the Red Birds. Goose Goslin led the Detroit club with three hits. The key for St. Louis was their bullpen, which shut down Detroit after starter Bill Hallahan yielded three runs. The heaviest burden was on Jesse Haines, the NL relief pitcher of the year, who yielded only two hits in three innings to keep St. Louis in the game until Collins and the offense could push across the game winning runs.
