At Navin Field the Detroit Tigers outscored the Cleveland Indians 6 to



3.







Detroit drew first blood jumping out to an early lead in the first inning as



they scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. That was all the offense they were to



need. Detroit totaled 8 on the afternoon.







Firpo Marberry(5-7) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Chief



Hogsett was credited with his 6th save. Mel Harder(8-2) was the losing



pitcher.

First baseman Hank Greenberg hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers



clobbered the outmatched Cleveland Indians, 13 to 3.







Detroit started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of the



first when they scored 3 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Jo-Jo White



who brought the crowd to their feet when he lined a single plating two runs.



Detroit finished with 15 hits while Cleveland ended up with 11.







The victory was credited to Carl Fischer(4-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 2



runs. Willis Hudlin(4-6) was charged with the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 5



walks in 6 innings.







Detroit won for the 6th straight time.

Roy Johnson had 3 base hits and 3 RBI and Wes Ferrell had a strong outing as



the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 9 to 2 at



Fenway Park.







Boston promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they scored 4



runs on 5 hits. The early run support proved sufficient for Ferrell(4-1) and



Boston. That was all the run support Ferrell required. Boston totaled 10 on



the afternoon.







Danny Macfayden(1-8) was given the loss. 'All of my pitches were working



today,' Ferrell said. 'I felt really good out there, and heck, I think I



could have gone longer.'

Johnny Welch was able to finish what he started and was credited with a



complete game as the Boston Red Sox destroyed the New York Yankees by a score



of 14 to 1 at Fenway Park.







In the bottom of the 2nd inning Boston went on top for good plating an



isolated run. Boston rapped out 16 hits for the afternoon.







The win went to Welch(8-2) who allowed 1 run in the game. Jimmie Deshong(4-2)



was tagged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in



6 innings.

At Griffith Stadium, the Washington fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.



General Crowder(3-5) finally bested his Philadelphia opposite, Al



Benton(7-4), by the score of 2 to 1.







In the bottom of the 4th inning Washington scored 2 runs when they had 3 base



hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Philadelphia made it exciting



in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.







Alex McColl recorded the save, his 6th. Benton was hit with the loss. He



surrendered 2 runs and 6 hits in 8 innings.

Bobby Burke tossed a complete game and Red Kress jacked one out of the



ballyard and had 5 RBI as the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia



Athletics by a score of 7 to 4.







It was a good day for Washington thanks to Kress. He delivered a single



scoring a run in the 2nd inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs



(his 1st of the season) in the 5th inning and smacked a one-base hit in the



7th inning. Washington had a total of 14 hits for the game.







Burke(5-2) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Johnny



Marcum(8-4) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Washington,



allowing 14 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

Browns beat the Chicago White Sox by the count of 8 to 5.







Jack Knott(2-3) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He was



reached for 4 hits and 1 walk in 4 innings improving his ERA from 2.83 to



2.61. For the game St. Louis out-hit Chicago 13 to 10.







Sam Jones(6-8) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 12 hits and 4 walks



in 6 and 2/3 innings. St. Louis now has a record of 22-44. Jimmy Dykes was



unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he



said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

complete game and right fielder Mel Ott slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI at



Polo Grounds as the New York Giants beat the Boston Braves by the count of 8

New York claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring 4 runners on 5



hits. That early run support was enough for Fitzsimmons(10-6) and New York.



New York managed 13 in their victory.







Fred Frankhouse(7-9) ended up with the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 11 hits in

Phillies beat the struggling Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 2 to 1.







In the bottom of the 6th inning Philadelphia scored 2 runs when they had 3



base hits. Dolph Camilli led off and started the rally when he slapped a



one-base hit. Kiddo Davis stepped into the batter's box and he delivered a



base-hit. Bucky Walters then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Al Todd came up



and he lined a one-base hit which was good for two runs. Brooklyn threatened



in the 9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.







Collins(9-5) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Dutch Leonard(7-2)



ended up with the loss. 'We won because we did the little things right.'

inning, smacked a single which scored a run in the 3rd inning, delivered a



base-hit in the 5th inning and delivered a solo blast (his 6th of the season)



in the 8th inning. Philadelphia lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when



they had 9 runs on 7 hits and the 5th inning with 5 runs on 7 hits.



Philadelphia had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6



separate innings.







Snipe Hansen(4-4) went 7 innings allowing 8 runs for the victory. Boom-Boom



Beck(3-4) was charged with the loss. By giving up 8 runs in 2 and 2/3



innings his ERA increased from 4.03 to 5.31.

Rip Collins hit one over the fence and Tex Carleton completed the game without



help from the bullpen as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs by



a score of 4 to 1 at Sportsman's Park.







St. Louis went ahead for good in the bottom of the 4th inning scoring a single



run using 3 hits. Frankie Frisch laced a single. After an out was recorded,



Collins came to the plate and delivered a single. Spud Davis then lined a



base-hit scoring the run. St. Louis had 11 hits for the afternoon.







Carleton(9-5) allowed 1 run on the game. Bill Lee(6-4) was hit with the loss.



He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings.

Gabby Hartnett blasted a grand slam and Jim Weaver tossed a shutout as the



Chicago Cubs outscored the St. Louis Cardinals 7 to 0.







Hartnett had a big day against St. Louis. He doubled in the 7th inning and



cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 17th of the season) in the



8th inning. Chicago had a total of 14 hits for the game.







Weaver(2-5) went the distance for the shutout. The loss was charged to Jim



Mooney(3-3). He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run



in his 6 innings of work.







Chicago now has a record of 44-28. With the loss, the St. Louis ballclub's



record is 39-31.

Larry French went the distance as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Cincinnati



Reds by a score of 6 to 5 at Forbes Field.







Cincinnati was unable to claim the lead after Pittsburgh went ahead in the



bottom of the 4th inning when they tallied 2 runs on 2 hits. Cincinnati had



a chance in the 9th but they came up short.







French(9-5), allowing 5 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Si



Johnson(4-8) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 4 walks



in 8 innings.







Bob O'Farrell was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we



just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more



white hairs on this noggin of mine.'

The Pittsburgh Pirates nipped the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 5 at Forbes Field in a



hard fought contest.







Pittsburgh came up with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The key



offensive moment was provided by Gus Suhr who made the crowd happy when he



cleared the fences for a two-run home run (his 7th of the season).



Pittsburgh had 9 hits for the afternoon.







The win went to Bill Swift(6-3) who allowed 5 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.



Heinie Meine recorded his 2nd save. Paul Derringer(5-8) absorbed the loss.







'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it



was nothing.' Swift said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put



the ball where I wanted it.'
