Vito Tamulis had a strong outing as the New York Yankees defeated the



Philadelphia Athletics by a score of 4 to 3 at Shibe Park.







In the 5th inning New York went on top for good when they scored 2 runs on 2



hits. The key at-bat was by Tamulis who quieted the crowd when he delivered



a base-hit scoring two baserunners. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but



their rally came up short.







The victory was credited to Tamulis(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 3



runs. Joe Cascarella(9-12) suffered the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 4 hits



in 6 and 1/3 innings.

Park.







Cleveland had 5 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning when they had 4 base



hits. That early run support was enough for Harder(16-8) and Cleveland.



Cleveland rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon.







Bump Hadley(10-18) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around,



surrendering 5 runs in 2 innings.

was charged to Wes Ferrell(15-7). He was unable to control the Washington

At Fenway Park the Washington Nationals outscored the Boston Red Sox 6 to



3.







Washington erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 8th inning



scoring 3 runs utilizing 2 base hits. John Stone led off and started the



rally when he drew a walk. Fred Sington next to the plate and he lined a



base-hit. After an out was recorded, Ossie Bluege came up and he lined a



one-base hit knocking in a run. Herb Pennock then uncorked a pitch that was



ruled a passed ball. Eddie Phillips came to the plate and reached on an



error as two more runners crossed the plate. The teams had been locked in a



scoreless duel until the 6th inning.







The win was credited to Lefty Stewart(5-16) who went 7 innings allowing 3



runs. Stewart got relief help from Alex McColl who gained credit for his 11th



save. Johnny Welch(11-11) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs



and 6 hits in 7 and 1/3 innings.

First baseman Phil Cavarretta hit a homerun and had 4 RBI and Guy Bush pitched



a complete game at Wrigley Field where the Chicago Cubs beat the lifeless



Cincinnati Reds by the score of 9 to 1.







Cavarretta helped send the fans home happy. He belted a three-run homer (his



1st of the season) in the 1st inning, tripled in the 4th inning and singled



resulting in a run in the 5th inning. Chicago banged out 10 on the



afternoon.







The victory went to Bush(14-11) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Whitey



Wistert(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 7 hits



and 2 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

The New York fans enjoyed the offense provided by Fitzsimmons. He smashed a



two-run homer in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 6th inning.



New York had 12 hits for the afternoon.







Fitzsimmons(24-8) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. The



loss was charged to Curt Davis(12-15). He served up 3 homeruns in his 8

Pirates lost a heartbreaker to impressive St. Louis Cardinals by the score of

St. Louis scored the deciding run in the 9th inning. Joe Medwick tripled.



Rip Collins next to the plate and he lined a single resulting in an exciting



win for St. Louis and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans.



St. Louis finished with 7 hits in the victory.







Dean(21-10) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Larry



French(16-13) was the losing pitcher. He gave up 2 runs and 7 hits in 8



innings.
