Depression Era Baseball Gets Its First Tag

Jaybird's Jottings in a blog covering a wide variety of subjects: DC area issues, the San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball and baseball history written by a DC area SABR member. Here's the except from his February, 2008 post:

You Know Bill Terry is Watching
Alec, a baseball and Strat-o-Matic fan here in Washington, is replaying the 1934 season at his blog,
Depression Era Baseball. He told me, "I thought doing a replay would be a good way for me to get into a period of baseball history I knew little about but found very interesting."
Alec enhances his look back with biographies, backgrounds, book reviews, etc.

Gus Suhr had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Brooklyn

Dodgers in 10 innings 9 to 8.

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Pittsburgh won the

game in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Lloyd Waner initiated

the scoring spurt when he smacked a single. Paul Waner followed and he laced

a base-hit. After another out, Arky Vaughan stepped in and he drew a walk to

load the bases. Suhr was up next and he doubled scoring two baserunners.

Wally Roettger stepped into the box and stroked a single giving Pittsburgh

the victory and sending the 6,243 home-town fans home happy. This was the

kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

Waite Hoyt(11-9) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Tom

Zachary(3-9) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings allowing

5 hits and 3 walks.
