Left fielder Bob Johnson smacked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Johnny Marcum

tossed a complete game at Navin Field as the Philadelphia Athletics beat the

Detroit Tigers by the count of 7 to 4.



Johnson had a big day against Detroit. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park

in the 1st inning and rifled a three-run blast (his 36th of the season) in

the 3rd inning. The Detroit bats were silent in the bottom of the 9th.



The winning pitcher was Marcum(15-7) who allowed 4 runs for the game.

Schoolboy Rowe(17-8) was the loser. He surrendered 10 hits and 1 walk in 9

innings.

Rick Ferrell had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated the

Cleveland Indians by the score of 10 to 6 at League Park.



Cleveland was unable to claim the lead after Boston went ahead in the 2nd

inning with 2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, Dusty

Cooke got things going when he banged out a single. Cooke took his lead and

swiped second. Ferrell then doubled driving in a run. Eddie Morgan was up

next and he delivered a single scoring the final run of the inning. Overall

Boston out-hit Cleveland 16 to 11.



Lefty Grove(7-6) went 7 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Ralph

Winegarner(3-4) was given the loss. He was touched for 11 hits and 4 walks

in 5 innings.

Bobo Newsom allowed Rogers Hornsby to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete

game as the St. Louis Browns beat the Washington Nationals by a score of 7 to

4.



Harlond Clift helped send the fans home happy. He ripped a base-knock in the

1st inning, lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 7th of the

season) in the 4th inning and lined a single which scored a run in the 7th

inning. Washington went down without a fight in the 9th.



Newsom(14-8) finished the game allowing 4 runs in the victory. Alex

McColl(5-3) ended up with the loss in relief. He was knocked around pretty

good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.

Hal Schumacher tossed a complete game and Hughie Critz had 4 hits and 3 RBI as

the amazing New York Giants defeated the Chicago Cubs 7 to 1 at Polo

Grounds.



Chicago never recovered after New York took the lead in the 2nd inning scoring

one runner. New York had 13 hits for the afternoon.



Schumacher(15-10) was the winner allowing 1 run for the game. Guy Bush(11-10)

was the loser. He allowed 3 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings.

Dizzy Dean pitched a complete game shutout as the Brooklyn Dodgers were badly

beaten by the very potent St. Louis Cardinals, 14 to 0.



Bill Delancey was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he

provided much of the offense for the visitors. He lashed a single in the 2nd

inning, singled in the 3rd inning and depressed the partisan hometown fans

with a grand slam home run (his 12th of the season) in the 4th inning. St.

Louis banged out 16 on the afternoon.



It was the 7th shutout of the year for Dean(19-8). Dutch Leonard(11-5) took

the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

Right fielder Johnny Moore had 4 hits as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the

Cincinnati Reds by a score of 5 to 3.



Philadelphia scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 3 hits. The big

moment was provided by Ethan Allen who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch

when he doubled plating two runs. Philadelphia finished with 16 hits while

Cincinnati ended up with 8.



Snipe Hansen(7-7) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Hansen got

help from Cy Moore who earned his 3rd save. Si Johnson(7-14) absorbed the

loss. He gave up 14 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings.



'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Hansen, 'I was

just giving us a chance to win.'

Ben Cantwell completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Boston

Braves defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 3 at Braves Field.



Boston took the lead off Bill Swift in the first inning scoring 4 runners on 4

hits. That early run support was enough for Cantwell(8-7) and Boston.

Boston rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.



Swift(9-9) took the loss. He allowed 9 hits and no walks in 7 innings.

Boston extended their winning streak to 6 games.
