NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 National League Date: 8/18/1934

BOSTON AT CHICAGO

Braves.......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 - 2 3 0

Cubs............ 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 1 - 3 12 1

Win:Weaver(6-7) Loss:Betts(7-10)

Kiki Cuyler had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Jim Weaver took a no-hitter into the

6th inning as the Chicago Cubs won at Wrigley Field in dramatic fashion over

the Boston Braves, the final score, 3 to 2.

The game was won by Chicago with a run in the 9th inning. Billy Herman drew a

walk. Two outs later Cuyler came to the plate and slapped a base-hit giving

Chicago the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Chicago totaled

12 on the afternoon.

Weaver(6-7) allowed 2 runs on the game. The right-handed Weaver had his

no-hit bid broken up by Bill Urbanski who singled with two outs in the 6th

inning. Huck Betts(7-10) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard,

allowing 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

BROOKLYN AT CINCINNATI

Dodgers......... 0 2 3 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 5 10 0

Reds............ 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 - 1 3 1

Win:Leonard(10-3) Loss:Benton(0-2)

Dutch Leonard pitched a 3 hitter at Crosley Field where the Brooklyn Dodgers

beat the hapless Cincinnati Reds 5 to 1.

Leonard(10-3) simply dominated Cincinnati. He gave up just 3 hits and 1 walk

in 9 innings. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team

was able to score again.

Larry Benton(0-2) was charged with the loss. Casey Stengel was just happy to

get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great to get

the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and play the kind

of baseball of which we are capable.'
