Nats Upend Tigers with Strong Pitching
Russell keeps Tigers hitters guessing

Center fielder John Stone had 2 base hits as the Washington Nationals beat the Detroit Tigers by a score of 4 to 3. Jack Russell (1-0) (pictured) earned the victory with a fine relief performance. Heallowed no hits and 1 walk in 3 innings, seeing his ERA drop from 4.70 to 3.38.

Washington had 9 hits for the afternoon. Tommy Bridges(1-5) absorbed the loss. The Washington ballclub's record now stands at 18-13. With the loss, Detroit has a record of 4-6 lately, 15-14 overall.

Cascarella dazzles with 10 Ks

Joe Cascarella dominated striking out 10 St. Louis batters as the Philadelphia Athletics outscored the St. Louis Browns 9 to 3.

Cascarella(3-0) pitched a solid game. He was reached for 9 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.44. Philadelphia banged out 17 on theafternoon. Ivy Andrews(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around pretty good,giving up 7 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Cascarella didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had 10 he was obviouslysurprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent total, but I didn'tthink I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good, isn't it?'

Chapman's bases loaded triple gives New York the win

Ben Chapman lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 4 RBI as the New YorkYankees rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Cleveland Indians,8 to 5.

New York had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 4 runnerson 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Chapman who silenced League Park as he doubled emptying the bases. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory. Johnny Murphy(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 innings and allowing 5 runs. Harry Smythe earned the save, his 1st. Belve Bean(1-1) absorbed theloss in relief. New York scored big getting 4 runs off him in 3 and 2/3innings.

'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Chapman said. 'If you just keep trying good things can happen!'

Zeke Bonura had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at Comiskey Park where the Chicago WhiteSox beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 8 to 5.

Boston fell behind quickly as the Chicago offense came through in the firstinning scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. After an out was recorded, MuleHaas was the sparkplug when he drew a walk. Bonura next to the plate and heslapped a base-hit. Al Simmons then lashed a single bringing in a run.Simmons took second on the throw. Luke Appling was up next and he hit aone-base hit driving home another two teammates. Chicago rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.

The victory went to Sam Jones(2-4) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4runs. Les Tietje was credited with his 2nd save. Fritz Ostermueller(1-3) wasthe loser. He was knocked around, surrendering 7 runs in 6 innings.
