In a close game the Cleveland Indians got by the Detroit Tigers in 12 innings



by the score of 5 to 3.







The score was tied at 2 after nine. Cleveland came out on top in the 12th



inning. Bob Seeds opened up the inning nicely when he slapped a one-base



hit. Billy Knickerbocker stepped up next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt.



Earl Averill then lined a base-hit to load the bases. Dutch Holland was a



strikeout victim, unable to help out. Hal Trosky stepped into the box and



laced a base-knock, and an error was also committed, driving home two runs.



Odell Hale added to the outburst and hit a deep fly scoring the final run of



the inning. Detroit had 12 hits in the game while Cleveland had 9, but



Cleveland had the more timely hits.







The winning pitcher was Thornton Lee(2-2) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings.



Firpo Marberry(7-9) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning and



surrendered 3 hits and no walks.

innings as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to



2.







New York took the lead for good in the 5th inning scoring one runner on 2



hits. New York managed 10 in their victory.







Gomez(14-9) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Rube Walberg(7-4) was



tagged with the loss. He was unable to control the New York offense and



allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.







With this win, New York has a 52-52 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With



this loss, Boston has a 6-4 record of late, 65-43 overall.

First baseman Jimmie Foxx had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the



Philadelphia Athletics beat the Washington Nationals by the count of 6 to

Bill Dietrich(9-4) delivered a fine performance for Philadelphia. He



surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. Washington threatened in the



9th but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally.







Roy Mahaffey earned his 1st save. Ed Linke(3-3) was given the loss. When



questioned about the loss, Joe Cronin said, 'The fans got to see an exciting



game out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it done this



time. Next time, though, we'll be the clubhouse with all the smiles.'

Les Tietje completed the game without help from the bullpen at Comiskey Park



as the Chicago White Sox won in their last at-bat beating the St. Louis



Browns by the count of 2 to 1.







The game was decided in the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Jimmy Dykes



drew a walk. Jackie Hayes followed and he doubled. Marty Hopkins then was



walked intentionally to load the bases. One out later, Al Simmons stepped up



to the plate and he drew a walk giving Chicago the victory and sending the



2,443 home-town fans home happy. Chicago had only 4 hits for the afternoon.







The victory went to Tietje(4-9) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Bump



Hadley(6-13) absorbed the loss. He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 hits



and 8 walks.

One run was the difference at Polo Grounds as the Boston Braves defeated the



New York Giants 5 to 4.







Boston took the lead off Carl Hubbell in the first inning scoring a single run



on 2 hits. New York threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.







Huck Betts(7-9) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Bob Smith



recorded the save, his 6th. Hubbell(18-6) was the losing pitcher. He



allowed 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.







Boston now has a record of 48-59. With the loss, New York has a record of 6-4



lately, 68-40 overall.

3 runs on 5 hits. Philadelphia was out-hit by Brooklyn, 16 hits to 13.







Phil Collins(11-9) was the loser. He was unable to control the Brooklyn

Spud Davis went deep and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the



Chicago Cubs 8 to 6.







St. Louis jumped on top to stay in the 6th inning as they scored 2 runs on 2



base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Davis who thrilled the



crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 7th of



the season). Chicago threatened in the 9th but St. Louis was able to put



down the rally.







The victory was credited to Tex Carleton(15-6) who went 8 innings, allowing 5



runs. Lon Warneke(16-7) absorbed the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 13 hits



and 2 walks in 8 innings.







'Some losses are harder to take than others' Charlie Grimm lamented after the



game. 'This was one of them.'

bullpen at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 9



to 2.







Pittsburgh tallied 4 runs in the 3rd inning when they had 3 base hits. That



was all the offense they were to need. Pittsburgh managed 14 in their



victory.







Hoyt(9-8) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Paul



Derringer(8-13) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 6 runs and 7 hits in 6
