Paul Waner had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Larry French went the distance as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 10 to 2. Waner was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He slapped a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 3rd inning, banged out a single in the 6th inning, smashed a two-run homer (his 4th of the season) in the 7th inning and laced a base-knock in the 9th inning. Pittsburgh banged out 16 on the afternoon. The victory went to French (5-3) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Tex Carleton(5-4) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective, surrendering 7 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies were certainly pleased to stop the bleeding as their7 game losing streak was finally halted and had an easy time of it at BakerBowl defeating the New York Giants by a score of 9 to 3. Curt Davis(5-4) had a solid outing for Philadelphia. He was reached for 10hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. Philadelphia had 13 hits for the afternoonwhile New York had 10. Joe Bowman(1-2) was the losing pitcher. 'Thankfully we got ourselves a win,' Davis said. 'It's great to be back on the winning side of things.'

Johnson takes no hitter into 6th

Si Johnson took a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the Cincinnati Reds topped the Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 4 at Wrigley Field. Gordon Slade was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He delivered a base-hit knocking in a run in the 2nd inning and quieted the crowd by clouting a Grand Slam (his 1st of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. Johnson (3-6) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings. The right-handed Johnson lost his chance for a no-hitter when Woody English singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Ray Kolp earned the save, his 1st. Bud Tinning(4-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He allowed 1 hit and 1 walk in 1 and 2/3 innings.


Dodgers Dispatch Braves with Ease, 6-1

Van Lingle Mungo went 9 strong innings and first baseman Sam Leslie had 3 base hits at Ebbetts Field as the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Boston Braves 6 to 1. Brooklyn tallied 4 runs in the 5th inning when they had 3 base hits. They ended up being the winning runs. Brooklyn banged out 10 on the afternoon. The victory was credited to Mungo(6-7) who went the distance, allowing 1 run. Bob Smith(1-1) took the loss.

'Mungo gave us exactly what we needed tonight,' Casey Stengel said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it forstrikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
