Lefty Stewart tossed a complete game at Griffith Stadium as the Washington

Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians 7 to 4.



Washington had 4 runs cross the plate in the 2nd inning with the help of 4

hits. They would hold up as the winning runs. Washington totaled 10 on the

afternoon.



The win was credited to Stewart(3-5) who went the whole way allowing 4 runs.

Oral Hildebrand(4-6) ended up with the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 3 walks

in 3 and 1/3 innings.



With this win, Washington has a 34-24 record. They have been 5-5 lately.

With this loss, Cleveland has a 6-4 record of late, 27-24 overall.

Mel Harder was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete

game and he had 4 hits and 3 RBI at Griffith Stadium as the Cleveland Indians

belted the Washington Nationals by the count of 16 to 4.



Cleveland scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning with the help of 6 hits. That

scoring would be all that was needed. Cleveland kept the scorekeepers busy

in the 2nd inning with 5 runs on 6 hits, the 5th inning when they had 4 runs

on 6 hits and the 6th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 5 hits.

Cleveland banged out 24 on the afternoon.



Harder(7-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Monte

Weaver(7-6) suffered the loss. He was knocked around, surrendering 9 runs in

4 innings.

Kiki Cuyler went deep and had 3 RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Boston

Braves in 10 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at Wrigley Field.



The score was tied at 4 after nine. Chicago won it in the 10th inning. Woody

English smacked a single. Tuck Stainback came next and he banged out a

single. Babe Herman* then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Cuyler got his turn

next, but he was a strikeout victim. Gabby Hartnett came to the plate and

was walked intentionally to load the bases. Augie Galan continued the rally

and drew a walk making Chicago the victor and beginning a joyous home town

celebration. Despite losing, Boston out-hit Chicago 15 to 10.



The win was credited to Roy Joiner(1-1) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Ed

Brandt(3-8) ended up with the loss. He pitched 9 and 2/3 innings and

surrendered 10 hits and 5 walks.

1,167 fans were treated to a fine game at Crosley Field as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The Cincinnati Reds offense put up 4

runs on the scoreboard in the 5th inning and won by the slimmest of margins,

7 to 6.



Cincinnati had 4 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning with the

help of 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Ernie Lombardi who made

the Cincinnati fans a happy lot when he tripled clearing all three ducks off

the pond. Brooklyn threatened in the 9th but Cincinnati was able to put down

the rally.



The winning pitcher was Benny Frey(2-7) who allowed 5 runs in 7 innings. Dazzy

Vance earned the save, his 1st. Johnny Babich(0-1) was charged with the

loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

Tom Padden had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the

New York Giants by the score of 7 to 4 at Forbes Field.



Pittsburgh brought 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning

with the help of 6 hits. The highlight belonged to Padden who made the

Pittsburgh fans a happy lot when he tripled plating two runs. Pittsburgh and

New York each finished the afternoon with 12 hits.



The victory went to Larry French(6-4) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 4

runs. Waite Hoyt was credited with his 5th save. Hal Schumacher(7-5)

suffered the loss.



Pittsburgh now has a record of 25-26. New York has a record of 35-22 after

the loss.
