Gehrig Returns to Yankees in Time to Resume Streak

Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig managed to return to his team in time to start yesterday's game and keep alive his streak of consecutive games started. Gehrig was expected to miss at least a few games after being hit in the head by a pitch in an exhibition game two days ago. Gehrig, however, checked himself out of the Norfolk hospital where he had been admitted and managed to catch a steamboat to Washington, DC to rejoin his teammates.

Bob Johnson homered and had 2 RBI at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia Athletics



pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Boston Red Sox by the count of 7



to 6.







Philadelphia erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2



runs on 3 hits. Eric McNair got things going when he stroked a base-hit.



Doc Cramer followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Johnson then



delivered a single plating a run. Jimmie Foxx came up and he drew a walk.



One out later, Ed Coleman stepped up to the plate and he doubled resulting in



an exciting win for Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the



home town fans. Both teams totaled 13 on the afternoon.







Roy Mahaffey(2-7) got the win allowing no runs in 1 inning. Wes Ferrell(3-1)



absorbed the loss. He allowed 12 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings.







Connie Mack was all smiles after the ballgame, 'It sure was looking pretty dim



there for a while, but our guys never gave up - and neither did our fans -



they kept cheering us on. What a sweet win!'

Second baseman Odell Hale hit a homerun at Comiskey Park where the Cleveland



Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 8 to 6.







Cleveland jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 2



runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Hal Trosky who quieted the home



crowd when he doubled which was good for two runs. Cleveland dominated



offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.







The win went to Willis Hudlin(4-5) who allowed 6 runs in 7 innings. Thornton



Lee earned his 2nd save. George Earnshaw(5-9) was the losing pitcher. He



allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits and 2 walks in 7



innings.







'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Hudlin said,



'this was one of those times.'

George Blaeholder allowed Rogers Hornsby to rest his bullpen, tossing a



complete game and Sammy West had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis



Browns defeated the Detroit Tigers by the score of 6 to 4 at Sportsman's



Park.







Blaeholder(4-8) pitched a solid game. He went 9 innings surrendering 13 hits



and 2 walks. St. Louis banged out 15 on the afternoon.







Luke Hamlin(1-2) was charged with the loss in relief. The St. Louis



ballclub's record now stands at 20-43. Mickey Cochrane was unhappy with his



club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets



to be embarrassing after a while.'

Carl Hubbell had a strong outing as the New York Giants beat the Brooklyn



Dodgers by a score of 3 to 1.







New York promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one runner



using 2 hits. New York totaled 9 on the afternoon.







The victory went to Hubbell(12-4) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Ray



Benge(7-9) absorbed the loss. Hubbell was obviously very pleased with his



performance in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games



where everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched



another two or three innings. I only hope that I can do it again next time



out!'

Arky Vaughan had 3 base hits and Ralph Birkofer allowed Pie Traynor to rest



his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the



Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 1 at Forbes Field.







Pittsburgh jumped on top of Chicago in the 3rd inning with 2 runs utilizing 4



base hits. After an out was recorded, Paul Waner opened up the rally as he



lined a base-hit. One out later, Vaughan stepped in and he stroked a single.



Gus Suhr then singled which scored a run. Suhr took second on the throw.



Cookie Lavagetto was up next and he laced a one-base hit scoring the final



run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Birkofer(5-7) needed.



Pittsburgh managed 12 in their victory.







Bill Lee(6-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10



hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Phil Collins went 9 strong innings and Johnny Moore had 2 base hits and 2 RBI



as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Braves by the score of 3 to



1 at Braves Field.







Philadelphia came up with 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning when they had 3



base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Moore who deflated the spirits



of the home town crowd when he delivered a single which was good for two



runs. Philadelphia banged out 12 on the afternoon.







Collins(8-5) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Fred



Frankhouse(7-8) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 12 hits and no walks



in 8 and 1/3 innings.







'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Collins. 'I had



good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything



went well.'

In a dramatic ending at Crosley Field the Cincinnati Reds won in their last



at-bat beating the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 2 to 1.







The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 9th. After two were out Adam



Comorosky laced a base-knock. Allyn Stout was next and he drew a walk. Tony



Piet then delivered a one-base hit giving Cincinnati the victory and sending



the 1,977 home-town fans home happy. Cincinnati finished with 10 hits while



St. Louis ended up with 7.







The win was credited to Stout(1-3) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Jim



Mooney(3-2) was charged with the loss in relief.
