Left fielder Moose Solters had 2 base hits at Yankee Stadium where the Boston



Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 5 to 3.







Boston scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. Rick Ferrell led off and



started the rally when he reached on an error. Eddie Morgan next to the



plate and he drew a walk. Lyn Lary then ripped a base-knock to load the



bases. Gordon Rhodes came up and he drew a walk resulting in a run. Al



Niemiec stepped into the box and hit a sacrifice fly scoring the final run of



the inning. Boston managed 10 in their victory.







The win was credited to Rhodes(15-12) who went 7 innings allowing 1 run. Fritz



Ostermueller gained credit for his 6th save. Lefty Gomez(23-10) was tagged



with the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 8 hits in 7 innings.







'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his



best stuff,' Bucky Harris said after the game. 'Rhodes did not have command



of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to



pitch!'

George Selkirk ripped 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Red Ruffing allowed Joe



McCarthy to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the New York Yankees



outscored the Boston Red Sox 4 to 3.







Selkirk had a good day at the plate. He laced a single in the 1st inning,



smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 4th inning and cracked a two-run



shot (his 4th of the season) in the 8th inning. Boston had a chance to come



back in the 9th but they came up short.







Ruffing(15-12) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. George



Hockette(0-2) ended up with the loss. He allowed 11 hits and 2 walks in 8



innings.

First baseman Jimmy Dykes had 2 base hits and 4 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the



Chicago White Sox beat the New York Yankees 11 to 8.







Chicago had the game winning rally in the top of the 8th inning scoring 6



runners on 7 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Dykes who quieted the



home crowd when he tripled scoring two baserunners. Chicago banged out 12 on



the afternoon.







George Earnshaw(11-17) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and



allowing no runs. Johnny Broaca(14-7) absorbed the loss. His biggest problem



was control as he allowed 12 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Newsom(17-9) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He gave up just 8 hits



and no walks in 9 innings. St. Louis finished with 12 hits in the victory.







Schoolboy Rowe(21-9) was the loser. He gave up 12 hits and 1 walk in 8



innings.

General Crowder was able to finish what he started and was credited with a



complete game and second baseman Charlie Gehringer jacked one out of the



ballyard and had 3 RBI at Sportsman's Park as the Detroit Tigers, running on



all cylinders, ripped the St. Louis Browns by a large 12 to 1



margin.







Detroit took the lead off George Blaeholder in the first inning when they



tallied 2 runs on 4 hits. That was all the offense they were to need.



Detroit had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate



innings.







Crowder(7-8), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. The loss was



charged to Blaeholder(9-18). He served up 3 homeruns in his 7 and 2/3



innings.

First baseman Zeke Bonura smashed 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI and Vern Kennedy



shutout Cleveland while allowing the Chicago bullpen a day-off as the



Cleveland Indians were badly beaten by the Chicago White Sox, 17 to



0.







Bonura provided much of the offense. He rifled a three-run blast in the 1st



inning, belted a three-run homer in the 4th inning, slapped a base-hit in the



5th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 27th of the season)



in the 7th inning. Chicago lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning when they



had 7 runs on 6 hits and the 5th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 4



hits. Chicago had 17 hits for the afternoon.







Kennedy(1-1) went the distance for the shutout. Monte Pearson(16-14) was



charged with the loss. He was unable to control the Chicago offense and



allowed 10 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.

two runs in the 7th inning. Cleveland was set down quietly in the 9th.







Tietje(6-13) allowed 5 runs on the game. Ralph Winegarner(3-6) absorbed the



loss. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

For Hubbell(23-9) it was his 10th shutout this year. The loss was charged to

11th inning. Johnny Frederick singled. After an out was recorded, Al Lopez

Leonard got relief help from Ownie Carroll who gained credit for his 3rd save.
