In a good matchup in the first game it was the Pittsburgh Pirates 5, the New York Giants 3 at the Polo Grounds. Larry French (4-2) delivered a fine performance for Pittsburgh. He went 8 innings allowing 11 hits and 1 walk. New York had 12 hits in the game while Pittsburgh had 8, but Pittsburgh had the more timely hits. French got help from Waite Hoyt who earned his 4th save. Hal Schumacher(4-3) was the losing pitcher. 'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you justget lucky,' French said, 'this was one of those times.'

Most fans stuck around for the game they had come to see. In a phenomanol pitching duel, the Giants were able to score only a single run, but it was all they needed as Carl Hubbell blanked the Bucs for yet another shutout en route to his 9th win of the season. Hubbell (9-1) gave New York a solid outing. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Pittsburgh had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. Ralph Birkofer (3-4) absorbed the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered just 4 hits and no walks.

Phillies rally to tie, but can't close it out

Catcher Spud Davis cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 8 atBaker Bowl. The score was knotted at 8 after nine innings. St. Louis won it in the 10thinning. Davis smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his 4th of the season). Bothteams finished the game with 16 hits. Jesse Haines(3-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings. SylJohnson(0-2) ended up with the loss in relief. The St. Louis ballclub'srecord now stands at 18-16. Philadelphia has a record of 13-18 after the loss.



Late Dodgers Rally in 10-6 Victory Over Reds
Herring keeps game in reach until Brooklyn bats answer

At Ebbetts Field the Brooklyn Dodgers easily handled the Cincinnati Reds bythe score of 10 to 6.

Art Herring(2-1) pitched well for Brooklyn in their victory. He was reachedfor 8 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Cincinnati threatened in the 9th, butBrooklyn was able to put down the rally. Herring was helped out by Harry Smythe who recorded his 1st save. Benny Frey(0-5) took the loss. He allowed 11 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 1/3innings.

'Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals' said Bob O'Farrell after the game.'We lost this game today because we didn't follow the instructions everyLittle Leaguer hears every day.' Dodger skipper Casey Stengel said he was impressed that Herring kept pitching even though Brooklyn wasn't hitting. 'He knew we'd come around sooner or later, and he just had to keep it close,' said Stengel. 'He solidered on for us.'

Marty McManus touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Boston Braves defeated theChicago Cubs by a score of 7 to 0 at Braves Field.

Jumbo Jim Elliott(1-1) delivered a fine performance for Boston. He was reached for 3 hits and 6 walks in 6 innings lowering his ERA from 7.00 to4.20. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. Bob Brown gained credit for his 1st save. Bill Lee(3-2) took the loss. Boston scored big getting 7 runs off him in 5 innings.
