Carl Hubbell had a strong outing as the New York Giants beat the Brooklyn



Dodgers by a score of 3 to 1.







New York promptly took the lead in their half of the first scoring one runner



using 2 hits. New York totaled 9 on the afternoon.







The victory went to Hubbell(12-4) who went the distance allowing 1 run. Ray



Benge(7-9) absorbed the loss. Hubbell was obviously very pleased with his



performance in the aftermath of the game, 'It was just one of those games



where everything worked. My arm felt great, heck, I could have pitched



another two or three innings. I only hope that I can do it again next time



out!'

Arky Vaughan had 3 base hits and Ralph Birkofer allowed Pie Traynor to rest



his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the Pittsburgh Pirates topped the



Chicago Cubs by a score of 5 to 1 at Forbes Field.







Pittsburgh jumped on top of Chicago in the 3rd inning with 2 runs utilizing 4



base hits. After an out was recorded, Paul Waner opened up the rally as he



lined a base-hit. One out later, Vaughan stepped in and he stroked a single.



Gus Suhr then singled which scored a run. Suhr took second on the throw.



Cookie Lavagetto was up next and he laced a one-base hit scoring the final



run of the inning. That early scoring was all that Birkofer(5-7) needed.



Pittsburgh managed 12 in their victory.







Bill Lee(6-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 10



hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.

Phil Collins went 9 strong innings and Johnny Moore had 2 base hits and 2 RBI



as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Braves by the score of 3 to



1 at Braves Field.







Philadelphia came up with 2 runs in the top of the 6th inning when they had 3



base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Moore who deflated the spirits



of the home town crowd when he delivered a single which was good for two



runs. Philadelphia banged out 12 on the afternoon.







Collins(8-5) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Fred



Frankhouse(7-8) was hit with the loss. He surrendered 12 hits and no walks



in 8 and 1/3 innings.







'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Collins. 'I had



good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything



went well.'

In a dramatic ending at Crosley Field the Cincinnati Reds won in their last



at-bat beating the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 2 to 1.







The deciding run was scored by Cincinnati in the 9th. After two were out Adam



Comorosky laced a base-knock. Allyn Stout was next and he drew a walk. Tony



Piet then delivered a one-base hit giving Cincinnati the victory and sending



the 1,977 home-town fans home happy. Cincinnati finished with 10 hits while



St. Louis ended up with 7.







The win was credited to Stout(1-3) who went 2 innings allowing no runs. Jim



Mooney(3-2) was charged with the loss in relief.

Gehrig Hit During Exhibition
"There Goes the Pennant," Laments Yankees Skipper

Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig was hit in the head by a wild pitch from Norfolk Tars pitcher Ray White. Gehrig, who laid on the ground unconscious for five minutes before being taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a concussion, is expected to miss at least a few games starting with today's with the Washington Senators, breaking his streak of consecutive games started.

Subtitled "The Golden Age of Baseball in Detroit," Cobb Would Have Caught It is a superb history of a ball team, its players and the city that loved it before, during and after the Great Depression. Cobb is really two books - a narrative history of the Tigers and the City of Detroit from the late 20s through the early 50s and a collection of player remineces from interviews Bak conducted with many of the players from that era. Combined into a single volume, the book is a fascinating and comprehensive account of the Tigers in that period.

Bak is a wonderful writer - clear and succinct, he keeps the reader's interest throughout the narrative chapters. The interviews are edited into some of the best oral histories I've read from players' of that period. They are full of descriptions of what life was like for players, their attitudes toward their teammates and opponents, etc. Bak has edited them so that they read well and are easy to follow.

There is little need to need to go on. If you have any interest in Tigers' history, it's a must read. Even if you just have an interest in this period of baseball, and presumably you do if you read this blog, it's one of the best books I've read that communicate a vivid picture of what life was like for ball players during this period. It's only limitation is that it only directly covers the Tigers. However, many of the players interviewed moved around (some only played a couple seasons in Detroit), so many of the stories cover other teams as well.

In short, every team and every period of baseball deserves a book like Bak's on the 1930s-1940s Detroit Tigers. I learned about the book from reading Bill James' Historical Abstract, which quotes from Bak's interviews in many of the player profiles from that period.
