AL Player of the Week - Bill Dickey

AL Player of the Week

Bill Dickey

Dickey (HA7) caught for New York (AL) from 1928 through 1946. Although he caught the vast majority of games, he also was platooned a lot, frequently only appearing in between 100 and 110 games per year.

Dickey was a major contributing force on McCarthy's four consecutive World Champion teams from 1936-1939, but had to share attention not only with teammates like Gehrig, but other great catchers like Gabby Hartnett and Ernie Lombardi. He also took over the reins as manager of the Yankees from McCarthy in 1946 although he couldn't catch the awesome 1946 Red Sox.

Dickey was also an outstanding defensive catcher, who was credit by Yoggi Berra for turning Berra into a catcher.

Dickey entered the Hall of Fame in 1954.
