NEWSPAPER GAME STORIES FOR 1934 American League Date: 8/10/1934

BOSTON AT PHILADELPHIA

Red Sox......... 0 1 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 - 3 8 1

Athletics....... 0 0 0 0 0 0 4 0 - 4 9 1

Win:Cain(12-8) Loss:Welch(9-4)

Homeruns- J.Foxx(41st)

Sugar Cain completed the game without help from the bullpen as the

Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4 to 3 at

Shibe Park.

Philadelphia came up with all the runs they needed in the 7th inning scoring 4

runners on 3 hits. The key at-bat was by Jimmie Foxx who brought a roar from

the partisan Shibe Park fans when he hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of

his teammates (his 41st of the season). Philadelphia finished with 9 hits in

the victory.

The winning pitcher was Cain(12-8) who allowed 3 runs for the game. Johnny

Welch(9-4) absorbed the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he did not

allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.

ST. LOUIS AT DETROIT

Browns.......... 0 0 1 0 0 2 0 2 0 - 5 8 2

Tigers.......... 1 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 - 3 8 1

Win:Newsom(10-5) Loss:Bridges(10-13)

Bruce Campbell had 3 base hits and Bobo Newsom pitched a complete game at

Navin Field as the St. Louis Browns beat the Detroit Tigers 5 to 3.

Detroit was unable to claim the lead after St. Louis went ahead in the 6th

inning when they tallied 2 runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by

Frank Grube who silenced the stadium when he doubled scoring two baserunners.

Both teams totaled 8 on the afternoon.

Newsom(10-5) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. Tommy Bridges(10-13)

was tagged with the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
