Elden Auker went the distance as the Detroit Tigers topped the Philadelphia



Athletics by a score of 5 to 1 at Navin Field.







Detroit promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they tallied 2



runs on 3 hits. That early scoring held up. Detroit managed 8 in their



victory.







The winning pitcher was Auker(9-4) who allowed 1 run for the game. Mort



Flohr(0-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 7 hits



and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

First baseman Hal Trosky had 4 hits and 3 RBI at League Park where the



Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 7 to 2.







Trosky had a good day at the plate. He clubbed a three-run home run (his 15th



of the season) in the 1st inning, lined a base-hit in the 4th inning, stroked



a single in the 6th inning and laced a base-knock in the 8th inning. For the



game Cleveland out-hit Boston 12 to 7.







Oral Hildebrand(8-7) went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.



Wes Ferrell(7-3) ended up with the loss. He was unable to control the



Cleveland offense and allowed 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Jack Saltzgaver had 4 hits and scored 5 times and Lefty Gomez allowed Joe



McCarthy to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the New York Yankees



outscored the Chicago White Sox 12 to 7.







Saltzgaver enjoyed a big day at the plate. He ripped a solo home run (his 2nd



of the season) in the 1st inning, slapped a base-hit in the 4th inning,



smacked a single in the 6th inning and tripled in the 7th inning. New York



managed 15 in their victory.







Gomez(12-7) lasted until the end allowing 7 runs for the win. The losing



pitcher was Les Tietje(3-8). By surrending 9 runs in 5 innings his ERA



jumped from 4.14 to 4.47.







New York now has a record of 43-41. With the loss, Chicago has a record of



4-6 lately, 29-58, worst in the league overall.

One run was the difference at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Browns



defeated the Washington Nationals 3 to 2.







Dick Coffman(3-7) was the winning pitcher with a solid relief performance. He



gave up just 2 hits and no walks in 2 innings. Washington threatened in the



9th but St. Louis was able to put down the rally.







Bobby Burke(5-4) was the loser. He pitched 8 innings allowing 8 hits and 2



walks. 'We won because we did the little things right.' Rogers Hornsby said



after the game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so



when we get in close games we don't make mistakes.'
