28,741 fans watched an exciting game at Polo Grounds. The Chicago Cubs topped

the New York Giants by the slimmest of margins, 3 to 2.



Chicago came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 8th inning scoring 2

runs using 2 hits. Gabby Hartnett started the inning off right when he was

hit by a pitch. Chuck Klein was next and he hit a single. Klein took second

on the throw. After an out was recorded, Charlie Grimm stepped in and he

stroked a base-hit which scored a run. Billy Herman followed and he hit a

sacrifice fly scoring the final run of the inning. New York had a chance to

come back in the 9th but they came up short.



Pat Malone(7-5) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Malone

got help from Bud Tinning who earned his 3rd save. Hal Schumacher(8-8) was

the losing pitcher. He surrendered just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings.

Jim Bottomley collected 2 extra-base hits and had 3 RBI at Baker Bowl where

the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 10 to

9.



The game started off with Cincinnati taking the lead in the first with 3 runs

utilizing 3 base hits. Tony Piet opened up the inning nicely when he stroked

a single. Gordon Slade next to the plate and he laced a base-knock. After

an out was recorded, Bottomley came up and he tripled knocking home two

runners. Chick Hafey was up next and he drew a walk. Harlin Pool stepped

into the box and reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning.

Philadelphia scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept

them from victory.



Allyn Stout(2-4) allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. Ray Kolp earned the save, his 3rd. Phil Collins(9-6) was charged

with the loss. He was not very effective, surrendering 8 runs in 7 innings.

The Pittsburgh Pirates came roaring back in the top of the ninth to spoil the

anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,, was 3 to

2.



Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning

with 3 runs using 3 hits. Tom Padden got things going when he drew a walk.

Lloyd Waner came next and he stroked a base-hit. Paul Waner then doubled

knocking home two runners. Arky Vaughan was up next and he lined a single

scoring the final run of the inning. Although they lost, Boston did out-hit

Pittsburgh 8 to 5.



Waite Hoyt(7-6) allowed 2 runs in 8 innings, and picked up the victory. Hoyt

got help from Leon Chagnon who earned his 5th save. Flint Rhem(4-4) took the

loss. He gave up just 3 runs and 5 hits in 9 innings.



Pie Traynor was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office

after the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just

sat there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating

wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Braves by a score of 6 to 3 at

Braves Field.



Pittsburgh scored 3 runs in the 7th inning with the help of 4 hits. They

would prove to be the difference in the contest. Pittsburgh finished with 10

hits in the victory.



Leon Chagnon(4-1) went 4 innings allowing no runs for the win. Ed Brandt(6-11)

took the loss. He pitched 9 innings and surrendered 10 hits and 2 walks.

Rip Collins hit for the cycle and had 5 RBI and Dizzy Dean allowed Frankie

Frisch to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the St. Louis

Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers 9 to 4 at Ebbetts Field.



Collins had a great day at the plate. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' (his

23rd of the season) in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, tripled

emptying the bases in the 5th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and hit a

single which scored a run in the 9th inning. St. Louis totaled 14 on the

afternoon.



Dean(10-7) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. The loss was charged

to Ray Benge(8-10). He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 4 and

1/3 innings.



St. Louis now has a record of 46-33. With the loss, the Brooklyn ballclub's

record is 37-45.

Third baseman Pepper Martin slammed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the St. Louis

Cardinals defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers by the score of 7 to 6 at Ebbetts

Field.



Martin was in a groove all day. The Brooklyn fans hated to see him

approaching the batter's box. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the

4th inning, doubled scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning and blasted a

solo shot (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning. Brooklyn made it

exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.



The win went to Tex Carleton(11-5) who allowed 6 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings.

Jim Mooney got the save, his 1st. Les Munns(5-3) was given the loss.



'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park today,' Martin said. 'I'm

glad I decided to play!'
