Babe Ruth slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Lefty Gomez went the distance

at Navin Field where the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers by the

score of 4 to 2.



New York won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs. After an

out was recorded, Lou Gehrig keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Ruth

stepped into the batter's box and he popped a two-run clout over the fence

(his 10th of the season). New York had a total of 12 hits for the game.



The victory went to Gomez(11-7) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. The

loss was charged to Elden Auker(7-4) in relief.



'It's almost like the ball was trying to hit my bat,' Ruth said. 'Whenever I

would swing, the ball found the sweet spot.'

1,760 fans watched an exciting game at Sportsman's Park. The St. Louis Browns

topped the Boston Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.



The score was tied at 3 after nine. Finally, St. Louis pulled the game out in

the 11th inning. Oscar Melillo drew a walk. Rollie Hemsley next to the

plate and he drew a walk. Alan Strange then laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Bill McAfee was up next and he laced a one-base hit making St. Louis the

victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. Boston had 12 hits in

the game while St. Louis had 7, but St. Louis had the more timely hits.



The win was credited to McAfee(1-1) who went 1 inning allowing no runs. Joe

Mulligan(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 9 to 6

at Comiskey Park.



Chicago was unable to recover after Philadelphia went ahead in the 5th inning

scoring a single run. For the game Philadelphia out-hit Chicago 12 to 9.



The victory was credited to Bill Dietrich(8-2) who went 8 and 2/3 innings,

allowing 6 runs. Joe Cascarella got the save, his 1st. Milt Gaston(4-10) was

given the loss. He gave up 8 runs and 10 hits in 8 innings.

Mel Harder allowed Walter Johnson to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game

as the Cleveland Indians pulled out a win over the Washington Nationals by a

score of 2 to 1 at League Park.



The deciding run was scored by Cleveland in the bottom of the 9th. Odell Hale

singled. Willie Kamm stepped into the batter's box and he doubled. Frankie

Pytlak then was hit by a pitch. Johnny Burnett stepped in and he laced a

base-hit making Cleveland victorious to the delight of the the home town

crowd. Cleveland totaled 10 on the afternoon.



The victory was credited to Harder(9-3) who went the distance, allowing 1 run.

The losing pitcher was Jack Russell(3-3) in relief. He was unable to retire

a batter giving up 3 hits and no walks.
