Billy Rogell had 4 hits and 2 RBI at Navin Field where the Detroit Tigers beat







the Philadelphia Athletics 6 to 4.















Detroit brought 3 runs across the plate in the 5th inning when they had 3 base







hits. The critical plate appearance was by Rogell who brought the crowd to







their feet when he tripled plating two runs. The Philadelphia batters went







down meekly in the 9th.















The winning pitcher was Vic Sorrell(6-6) who allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3







innings. Schoolboy Rowe recorded the save, his 2nd. Bill Dietrich(8-3) was







charged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 13







hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.















Detroit now has a record of 51-36. With this loss, Philadelphia has a 3-7







record of late, 46-39 overall.

Firpo Marberry completed the game without help from the bullpen as the Detroit







Tigers defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in 10 innings by the score of 3 to







2 at Navin Field.















The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings. Detroit won it in the 10th







inning. Hank Greenberg drew a walk. Marv Owen stepped up next and he







doubled. Pete Fox then smacked a single making Detroit the winners and







sending the 14,165 fans home happy. Detroit finished with 7 hits in the







victory.















Marberry(6-8) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Al Benton(8-7)







took the loss. He pitched 9 innings allowing 7 hits and 5 walks.

Ruth was really in 'the zone'. He doubled which plated a run in the 1st







inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 11th of the







season) in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 5th inning and doubled which was







good for two runs in the 7th inning. New York had 13 hits for the afternoon.















The win was credited to Allen(4-1) who went the whole way allowing 2 runs. The







losing pitcher was Ted Lyons(3-9). 'I just got in the box, looked for a







pitch and swung,' Ruth said. 'That's it'
