Johnny Marcum tossed a complete game at Shibe Park as the Philadelphia

Athletics pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Detroit Tigers by the

count of 5 to 4.



Philadelphia came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning

scoring 3 runs using 2 hits. Pinky Higgins got things going when he drew a

walk. Ed Coleman was next and he drew a walk. Dib Williams then singled to

load the bases. After an out was recorded, Bing Miller came to the plate and

lost the ball over the fence for three runs (his 1st of the season) making

Philadelphia victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.

Philadelphia rapped out 9 hits for the afternoon.



The win went to Marcum(8-3) who allowed 4 runs in the game. Tommy Bridges(7-7)

was the loser. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.

Johnny Broaca went the distance and Lou Gehrig hit 2 doubles and had 3 RBI as

the slumping Chicago White Sox were badly beaten by the New York Yankees, 13

to 3.



New York started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half of

the first when they tallied 5 runs on 4 hits. That was all the offense they

were to need. New York finished with 14 hits in the victory.



Broaca(3-0), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. George

Earnshaw(5-8) was given the loss. He gave up 4 hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an

inning.

At Fenway Park the blistering-hot Boston Red Sox outscored the Cleveland

Indians 4 to 1.



Boston took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring one

runner. Boston had a total of 9 hits for the game.



Gordon Rhodes(6-8) was the winner allowing 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings. Rhodes

was helped out by Rube Walberg who recorded his 3rd save. Bob Weiland(7-4)

took the loss.



It was another victory for Boston at Fenway Park. Now their winning streak

stands at 8 games.

Dick Coffman tossed a complete game and Rollie Hemsley had 4 hits as the St.

Louis Browns defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 4 to 3 at

Griffith Stadium.



Coffman(2-6) gave St. Louis a solid outing. He was reached for 7 hits and 3

walks in 9 innings. St. Louis totaled 12 on the afternoon.



Earl Whitehill(11-4) was charged with the loss. With this win, St. Louis has

a 19-42 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With the loss, Washington has a

record of 4-6 lately, 37-29 overall.
