Flint Rhem was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete



game as the Boston Braves defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4 to 1 at Crosley



Field.







Boston came up with all the runs they needed in the 3rd inning when they



tallied 4 runs on 4 hits. That was all the offense they were to need.



Cincinnati threatened in the 9th but Boston was able to put down the rally.







Rhem(3-2) allowed 1 run on the game. The loss was charged to Paul



Derringer(5-6). 'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Bob



O'Farrell said. 'It's bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you



start beating yourselves, that's really bad.'

In a game for the baseball purist, Fred Fitzsimmons(9-5) and Tex Carleton(7-5)



squared off in a tense pitching duel, New York Giants finally emerged



victorious over St. Louis Cardinals, 2 to 1.







The score was tied at 1 after nine. New York came out the victor in the 10th



inning. After two were out Jo-Jo Moore delivered a base-hit. Hughie Critz



came next and he ripped a base-knock. Bill Terry then stroked a one-base hit



scoring the run. New York had 8 hits for the afternoon.







Fitzsimmons got help from Dolf Luque who earned his 4th save.

2,974 fans watched an exciting game at Crosley Field. The Boston Braves



topped the Cincinnati Reds by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.







Boston tallied 1 run in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits. Tommy



Thompson doubled. Wally Berger stepped into the batter's box and he laced a



single scoring the run. Leo Mangum, after tossing a perfect ninth, was



credited with his 2nd save.







The victory was credited to Ben Cantwell(3-5) who went 7 and 1/3 innings,



allowing 3 runs. Si Johnson(4-7) ended up with the loss. He allowed 4 runs



and 14 hits in 6 innings.

Center fielder Kiki Cuyler had 2 base hits and 4 RBI at Wrigley Field as the



Chicago Cubs beat the Brooklyn Dodgers by the count of 8 to 5.







The game started off with Chicago taking the lead in the first scoring 3



runners on 4 hits. Brooklyn made it exciting in the 9th, but they were



unable to push the needed runs across.







Pat Malone(6-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 8 and 2/3 innings and



allowing 5 runs. Jim Weaver recorded his 1st save. Van Lingle Mungo(8-8)



took the loss. He allowed 10 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.







Charlie Grimm was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good



contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning



these tight ones! It was just our day - no doubt about it!'

Babe Herman* touched them all and had 2 RBI and Bud Tinning threw a complete



game shutout as the Chicago Cubs topped the Brooklyn Dodgers by a score of 5



to 0 at Wrigley Field.







Tinning(5-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed only 8 hits



and no walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 3.10 to 2.64. Chicago had



9 hits for the afternoon.







Johnny Babich(0-2) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks



in 7 innings.

Pittsburgh scored 4 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 4 hits. They



ended up being the winning runs. Both teams finished the game with 13 hits.







The victory went to Red Lucas(4-5) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3



runs. Waite Hoyt got the save, his 6th. George Darrow(0-8) was given the



loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 7 innings.







'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Lucas said.
