Tigers unload in 6th to Defeat Yanks, 7-3
Bridges has another strong outing

Tommy Bridges completed the game without help from the bullpen and Marv Owencollected 2 extra-base hits as the Detroit Tigers defeated the New YorkYankees 7 to 3 at Yankee Stadium. Bridges(7-5) gave a fine effort for Detroit. He went 9 innings allowing 9hits and 6 walks and served up 2 'big flies'. Detroit had a total of 15 hitsfor the game. Red Ruffing(5-4) was tagged with the loss. He was knocked around by Detroit,allowing 12 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Bobby Burke held Cleveland scoreless on just 2 hits at Griffith Stadium as theWashington Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians 3 to 0. Burke(2-2) was tremendous on the mound for Washington. He surrendered only 2hits and 3 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 2.92 to 2.35.Washington had a total of 7 hits for the game. Lloyd Brown(3-4) was charged with the loss. Walter Johnson was obviouslyimpressed with the pitching of Burke, 'That guy made us look a little sillyout there this afternoon. We just couldn't get to him at all - everythingwas working for him. I just hope that he got that kinda performance out ofhis system.'

The A's swept the visiting White Sox in a double header, winning by a score of 3-2 in each game.

In the opener, Al Benton tossed a complete game. Benton(4-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't allow much, just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings seeing his ERA drop from 5.08 to 4.39. Chicago had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Ted Lyons (2-6) was tagged with the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 1 walk in 8 innings. 'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Jimmy Dykes said. 'We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'

In the nightcap, the Athletics again nipped the White Sox 3 to 2. Philadelphia had the game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Dib Williams led off and he singled. Doc Cramer stepped upto the plate and he lined a base-hit, and an error was also committed, bringing in a run. Rabbit Warstler then hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago again threatened in the 9th, but Philadelphia was able to put down the rally. The winning pitcher was Bill Dietrich(4-1) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings.Dietrich got help from Bob Kline who earned his 3rd save. Whit Wyatt(3-2)was the loser. He gave up 8 hits and no walks in 8 innings. Jimmy Dykes was in a contemplative mood after the tough loss, 'It is really hard to lose this kind of a game. It may seem weird to some, but it is easier to take the occasional blow-out loss. It is the ones that just barely get away that hurt so much - like this one!'


Sox Defeat Browns, 4-1

Ferrell delights Boston crowd with solid pitching

Wes Ferrell went the distance and Lyn Lary had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as theBoston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Browns by a score of 4 to 1 at FenwayPark. Boston had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 6th inning when theyhad 5 base hits. They would be enough to earn the win. Boston totaled 11 onthe afternoon. Ferrell(2-0) allowed 1 run on the game. George Blaeholder(2-7) absorbed theloss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 6 walks in 8 innings. Boston now has a record of 29-23. St. Louis has a record of 13-37, worst inthe league after the loss.
