Huck Betts shut out Chicago while allowing the Boston bullpen a day-off atWrigley Field as the Boston Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 3 to 0. Betts(4-6) pitched well for Boston in their victory. He went 9 innings, surrendering 8 hits and 2 walks reducing his ERA from 5.18 to 4.61. Boston had a total of 7 hits for the game. Jim Weaver(1-4) suffered the loss. 'Ahhh, that victory was surely needed. Manalive, things were getting awfully grim,' noted Bill McKechnie. 'Now, we need to string a bunch of wins together and turn things around!'

Si Johnson whitewashed Brooklyn and catcher Bob O'Farrell hit 2 doubles andhad 2 RBI at Crosley Field where the Cincinnati Reds beat the BrooklynDodgers by the score of 6 to 0. Johnson(4-6) contributed a very nicely pitched game. He didn't allow much,just 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA to 3.87. Cincinnatihad 12 hits for the afternoon. Ray Benge(7-6) ended up with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners, giving up 12 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings.

Pie Traynor had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the NewYork Giants by the score of 7 to 5 at Forbes Field. Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inningscoring 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Gus Suhr kicked off the action when helaced a base-hit. Cookie Lavagetto came next and he slapped a one-base hit.Wally Roettger then hit a deep fly scoring a run. Tom Padden was up next andhe lined a base-hit. Waite Hoyt came to the plate and laced a single scoringthe final run of the inning. New York made it exciting in the 9th, but theywere unable to push the needed runs across. Hoyt(3-5) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Hoyt got help fromLeon Chagnon who earned his 1st save. Dolf Luque(0-3) suffered the loss inrelief. He allowed Pittsburgh 4 runs in 2 innings of work. 'It's a disheartening loss, no question about it' said Bill Terry 'But we haveto get over it and get ready for the next game.'

Martin had a big day at the plate. He tripled bringing in two baserunners inthe 4th inning, cracked a solo homerun (his 3rd of the season) in the 6thinning and doubled knocking in a run in the 8th inning. St. Louis finishedwith 15 hits in the victory. Dean(5-7) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. George Darrow(0-6) wasgiven the loss. He gave up 6 runs in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. St. Louis now has a record of 30-22. With the loss, the Philadelphia ballclub's record is 19-31.
