May 3rd, 1934 - NL Game Summaries

Cubs Win 10th Game, Down Braves 7-3
Cuyler goes 4 for 4; hits for cycle

Kiki Cuyler (pictured) hit for the cycle and had 5 RBI and Pat Malone tossed a complete game as the Chicago Cubs defeated the struggling Boston Braves by a score of 7 to 3 at Wrigley Field. Cuyler was spectacular at the plate. The hometown fans showed theirappreciation with a standing ovation his last time at bat. He banged out a single in the 2nd inning, doubled, which scored a run, in the 4th inning, tripled plating two runs in the 6th inning and then bombed a two-run dinger (his1st of the season) in the 8th inning. Chicago rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. Malone(2-2), allowing 3 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Ed Brandt (2-2) was hit with the loss. He gave up 8 hits and no walks in 6innings. The Chicago ballclub's record now stands at 10-5. Braves skipper Bill McKechnie was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games' he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'




Reds Prevail 3-1 Over Dodgers
Reds prevail in tense pitching duel

In a game for the baseball purist, Ray Benge (2-1) and Ray Kolp (0-1) squared off in a tense pitching duel, Brooklyn Dodgers finally emerged victoriousover Cincinnati Reds, 3 to 1. Cincinnati lost it in the 3rd inning when Brooklyn did all their damage, scoring 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Al Lopez led off and started the attack as he drew a walk. After another out, Benge came up and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Buzz Boyle then tripled resulting in a run. Lonny Frey was up next and he laced a single scoring another run. Danny Taylor came tothe plate and drew a walk. Hack Wilson added to the rally and banged out aone-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. That early run support was enough for Benge and Brooklyn. Cincinnati could do no damage in the bottomof the 9th. Les Munns got the save, his 1st.


Giants Rally in Ninth to Beat Pirates, 4-3

Left fielder Jo-Jo Moore (pictured) hit 2 doubles at Forbes Field as the New York Giants staged a comeback win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by the count of 4 to3. New York won the game with a rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 3 hits.After two were out Harry Danning got things going when he lined a single.Moore followed and he doubled. Gus Mancuso then slapped a base-hit scoringtwo teammates. New York banged out 12 on the afternoon. The victory was credited to Al Smith(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing noruns. Dolf Luque recorded the save, his 1st. Waite Hoyt(0-2) ended up withthe loss in relief. After the game, it took a long while before Pie Traynor emerged from hisoffice. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. Heconcluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood thisafternoon, as I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter alot more light-hearted over in the New York locker room.'




Cardinals Win 4-3 Over Phils on Pinch Hit Homer
Delancey hits walk off homer to give Cards 6th win

In an exciting finish the St. Louis Cardinals pulled out a win over thePhiladelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 3 at Sportsman's Park. The game was won by St. Louis with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Bill Delancey smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 1st of the season) resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. St. Louis won despite being out-hit by Philadelphia 10 hits to 6. Paul Dean (2-1) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the victory. Phil Collins(1-2) was the losing pitcher. His ERA ballooned from 3.38 to 3.75 as he allowed 4 runs in 8 innings.
